Buganda Claims Lack of Notification on Govt Car Donation

Buganda’s Surprise at Car Gift Programme and Denial of Notification

Buganda has expressed surprise over a recent car gift programme, while also denying any prior notification regarding the matter. This revelation has sparked discussions among locals and officials alike, highlighting the complexities surrounding royal traditions and modern governance.

The new vehicle, which has already been spotted on the streets of Kampala, has captured the attention of many, especially boda boda riders who have shown their admiration by clapping and cheering when they saw the Kabaka wave to his subjects. The car was reportedly procured using internally generated funds to replace the Kabaka’s 1999 Lexus LX470, a model that he has always preferred over the Land Cruiser variants.

According to a source familiar with the matter, the decision to acquire a new vehicle was made internally, without any external influence or official notification. This has led to questions about the transparency of such decisions, particularly in light of the recent developments involving the Buganda and Bugwere Kingdoms.

In response to the unfolding narrative, Uganda’s Gender, Labour, and Social Development Minister Betty Amongi clarified that both the Buganda and Bugwere Kingdoms had declined government vehicles. During her visit to the Katikkiro (Prime Minister) of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, she stated that the kingdom’s culture requires certain provisions to be made by the subjects. As a result, the money intended for them was given as a lump sum instead.

The Kabaka’s return from a medical review in Europe has rekindled excitement among his subjects, with many anticipating his visits across the kingdom. This renewed interest underscores the importance of the Kabaka’s health and his ability to engage with his people.

Frederick Ssengooba, a trader at Kisekka Market, noted that the reason the Kabaka purchased a vehicle capable of taking him anywhere is because he must be healthy enough to tour his kingdom. This sentiment reflects the hopes and expectations of many who look forward to his presence and leadership.

Key Points to Consider

As discussions continue, it remains to be seen how this development will impact the relationship between the kingdom and the government, as well as the broader implications for future decisions regarding royal expenditures and public engagement.
