Empowering Women Entrepreneurs Through Business Support
Running a small business is an intricate balance of managing daily operations, meeting customer expectations, and maintaining financial stability. For many entrepreneurs, especially women in smaller communities, the challenges can be overwhelming. Limited access to resources, funding, and support often make it difficult to envision growth or even consider expanding their ventures. However, for Doreen Steenkamp, owner of Douglas-based salon Salon Doreen, this challenge has transformed into an opportunity for significant progress.
Steenkamp’s journey took a positive turn through the All Women-in-Business Empowerment Initiative, which is supported by Boikanyo Solar. This initiative focuses on empowering women aged 18 to 59 by offering them essential tools, training, and guidance to thrive in the formal economy. The program not only provides practical assistance but also fosters confidence and long-term sustainability for female entrepreneurs.
As part of the initiative, Steenkamp’s salon received a comprehensive upgrade. New equipment such as a hair cleansing basin, industrial dryers, manicure tables, and salon chairs were installed, along with updated signage. These changes have allowed her to significantly expand her service offerings and improve the overall client experience.
“Before receiving this support, I was only offering basic services such as washes and blowouts,” said Doreen. “Now with the new setup and equipment, I can offer wig installations, restorations, maintenance, and even manicures and pedicures.”
The transformation has had a tangible impact on her business. With the enhanced facilities, Steenkamp is now able to cater to a broader range of clients and provide more specialized services that were previously out of reach. This expansion not only increases her revenue potential but also strengthens her position within the local community.
Lesego Mosiane, Boikanyo Solar’s Social Performance Practitioner, highlighted the dedication and commitment shown by Steenkamp throughout the program. “Doreen has demonstrated great determination and has made the most of the opportunities provided. These assets will allow her to increase her revenue and deliver a better experience for her clients,” Mosiane noted. He added that the organization will continue to monitor her progress and support her as she continues to grow her business.
Steenkamp expressed her gratitude for the support and is already looking ahead to future possibilities. “With my upgraded salon now fully equipped, I’m ready to grow my business further and offer even more to my community,” she said.
This story exemplifies how targeted support and investment in women entrepreneurs can lead to meaningful change. By providing the necessary tools and encouragement, initiatives like the All Women-in-Business Empowerment Programme are helping women break barriers and achieve their full potential. As more programs like this emerge, they create a ripple effect, inspiring others to dream bigger and take bold steps toward success.
