Major automaker issues urgent recall amid fire safety concerns

Ford Recalls 700,000 Vehicles Over Fire Hazard Concerns

Ford has issued a global recall of approximately 700,000 vehicles due to concerns over a potential defect that could lead to underhood fires. The affected models include the 2021-2024 Ford Bronco Sport and the 2020-2022 Ford Escape, both equipped with a 1.5L engine. The issue stems from a problem with the fuel injectors, which may crack and pose a fire risk.

According to reports, the faulty parts were supplied by an Italian company named Dumarey Flowmotion Technologies. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has documented this information in its recall report. The defect can cause fuel leaks, leading to noticeable fuel odors inside and outside the vehicle. In more severe cases, smoke or even flames may emerge from the engine compartment or underbody.

In addition, drivers might see a fire warning displayed on their vehicle’s instrument panel if the issue occurs. To address the problem, Ford plans to update the engine control software to detect a cracked fuel injector. This update will also implement a strategy to disable the high-pressure fuel pump, reduce engine power, and lower engine temperatures. A tube will be installed to redirect fuel away from potential fire sources.

Ford is also working to resolve issues with vehicles that were not updated correctly. A recall query was initiated last April after it became clear that the initial software update did not fully address the root cause of the problem. The automaker is currently developing a permanent solution to the issue.

The necessary corrections will be carried out free of charge at Ford dealerships. As of now, there have been no reported injuries linked to the defect. However, the company expects a financial impact of $750 million due to the recall. Ford notified dealers about the defect on July 15, and customers are expected to receive notification letters by August 18.

This recall adds to a series of recent recalls affecting millions of Ford vehicles this year. The company continues to work on ensuring the safety and reliability of its products while addressing ongoing challenges related to quality control and manufacturing defects.

Key Details of the Recall

Ford remains committed to resolving the issue and maintaining consumer confidence. The company is actively working on long-term solutions to prevent similar problems in the future.
