Addressing Health Disparities in Lekki Through Community Outreach
The Rotary Club of Lekki Golden has made significant strides in improving healthcare access for underserved communities in the Ikota area of Lekki, Lagos. Through its maternal and child health initiative known as Project Safe Start, the club has delivered essential services aimed at enhancing the well-being of women and children.
This initiative, supported by Orchid Road General Hospital and BioSci Health Care, focused on preventive care and early diagnosis to address critical health challenges. The collaboration brought together medical professionals, volunteers, and community members to ensure that vulnerable populations received the support they needed.
A Collaborative Effort for Better Health Outcomes
Christiana Okenla, the president of the Rotary Club of Lekki Golden, expressed deep gratitude to all those involved in the project. In a statement, she highlighted the collective effort that made the initiative successful.
“Your support has brought hope, health, and healing to countless families. Together, we’ve demonstrated what is possible when service meets compassion,” Okenla said.
The project included several key components designed to tackle major health issues affecting the community. One of the primary efforts was the distribution of 100 mosquito nets, tailored for both adults and infants, to reduce the spread of malaria. Additionally, 50 sickle cell screening kits were provided to facilitate early detection and better management of the condition among newborns.
Focusing on Maternal Wellness and Preventive Care
In addition to these interventions, the outreach program featured on-site health check-ups for over 70 women. These check-ups were conducted by a team of doctors and nurses from Orchid Road General Hospital and emphasized maternal wellness and preventive healthcare. By focusing on early intervention, the initiative aimed to reduce complications during pregnancy and improve overall health outcomes for mothers and their children.
Another notable component of the project was the launch of the Dress a Dream campaign, which provided clothing to children in need. This initiative not only addressed immediate needs but also helped boost the confidence and dignity of young beneficiaries.

According to Rtn Okenla, the initiative aligns with the broader goals of Rotary International, particularly in the areas of maternal and child health. She emphasized that the project reflects the club’s commitment to creating sustainable impact at the grassroots level.
