Leadership Changes in the Korea Sports Council
At a recent meeting of the 42nd Korean Sport & Olympic Committee, held on the 29th at the Jincheon National Training Center, several key leadership positions were announced. The event took place at 1:30 p.m. and focused on the composition of the Athletes’ Committee and the selection of representatives for the upcoming election of the chairman and vice chairman.
Kim Kook-young, who holds the 100m track and field record in South Korea, was appointed as the new chairman of the Athletes’ Committee. His appointment followed a recommendation from the athletes themselves. The committee also decided to elect one of the members from the summer, winter, and women’s committees as the vice chairman. Choi In-jeong, a former Fencing Epee World Champion, was selected as the female vice chairman. The selection of the vice chairman for the summer and winter committees was left to the discretion of Chairman Kim Kook-young.
In addition, several athletes were elected as delegates and directors of the Korean Sports Council. Kim Kook-young, along with Won Yoon-jong, a candidate for the IOC Athletes Commission, and Choi In-jeong, were chosen as directors. These appointments aim to ensure that the voices of athletes are represented effectively within the council.
Kim Taek-soo, president of the National Athletes’ Village, delivered a letter of appointment to the members of the Athletes’ Committee on behalf of the Korea Sports Council. He urged the committee to move forward in a substantial and progressive manner, emphasizing their role as active representatives of athletes’ rights and interests. “Please make full efforts to propose and improve policies, and the athletes’ village will also provide generous support,” he stated. The term of office for the athletes will last until the day before the regular general meeting of the general assembly in 2029.
