First Bank Launches Junior Internship Program for Primary Students

First Bank Ghana Launches Junior Internship Programme 2025 for Young Learners

First Bank Ghana has introduced its Junior Internship Programme 2025, aimed at providing children aged 10 to 14 with a hands-on experience of the professional world. This initiative seeks to inspire young minds early on, helping them explore potential career paths before they reach secondary school or university.

The two-month programme will run from Monday, July 14, 2025, to September 12, 2025, and will be available at all 30 branches of First Bank Ghana across the country. The programme is designed to offer students an immersive look into the banking sector, breaking away from traditional perceptions of what banking entails.

Changing Perceptions of Banking

Many students make career decisions during their secondary education without any real-world exposure. First Bank Ghana’s programme aims to change this by introducing young participants to the complexities of the banking industry. According to Mr. Victor Yaw Asante, Managing Director of First Bank Ghana, the initiative is about giving students a chance to understand the profession before making important life choices.

“We want them to experience the workplace before making those pivotal decisions. What better way to understand a profession than an internship?” he questioned.

The programme goes beyond the common misconception that banking is simply about counting money or handling transactions. Instead, it highlights the diverse roles and responsibilities within the sector. Participants engage in age-appropriate activities such as customer interaction, operations, and field exposure. In many cases, students also shadow employees and document their experiences.

Building Foundational Skills

Mr. Asante emphasized that the programme is not about turning students into bankers overnight but rather about instilling essential life skills. “It’s about appreciation, not expertise,” he said. “You won’t become a banker in two weeks, but you can gain invaluable insights in the discipline—showing up on time, following routines, reporting to supervisors—and the vast array of roles within the sector.”

The programme is structured to encourage curiosity and learning, offering students a glimpse into different aspects of the banking world. It also allows for flexibility based on individual interests. Students who express a desire to explore areas like IT, Finance, or Treasury may be placed in specialized departments at the bank’s head office in Accra.

Partnerships and Opportunities

First Bank Ghana has collaborated with several well-known companies to enhance the programme’s value. These partners include Awake mineral water, Kivo, Gino, Pepsodent, Kiki juice drink, Top-Up Pharmacy, Junior Graphic, and the Ghana National Council of Private Schools. Through these partnerships, students gain access to additional learning opportunities and rewards.

Participants will receive a certificate of participation upon completion. They also have the chance to win exciting prizes from partner companies, attend culinary sessions with Gino’s MasterChef, and take part in an essay competition with a prize of up to GH¢4,000. Additionally, the programme includes educational tours to the manufacturing plants of some of the partner companies.

Expanding Reach and Participation

This initiative was first launched three years ago and has seen significant success. Last year alone, over 300 students participated in the programme. Mr. Asante shared that the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with testimonials from students and parents alike. However, due to high demand, previous participants are being asked to step aside to make room for new ones.

For this year, the bank aims to accommodate 500 students. To participate, students must be junior account holders with a minimum balance of GH¢300. Parents or guardians need to provide their child’s Ghana Card or a passport, weighing card, or birth certificate to open an account. Existing customers only need to ensure their account balance meets the threshold and complete an application form.

Encouraging Exploration and Growth

Mr. Asante encourages parents to bring their children to join the programme. “Come and try this. You will never regret it. It exposes you to what banking is—and what it isn’t—helping you make informed career decisions beyond just medicine or piloting. Speak to those who came before; they’ll tell you. Experience it for yourself!”

Through this innovative approach, First Bank Ghana is not only shaping the future of young learners but also fostering a culture of curiosity, exploration, and lifelong learning.
