Mercedes’ Electric Luxury Van Offers Impressive Range

A New Era of Luxury and Efficiency in Electric Vans

Mercedes-Benz is set to redefine the electric van segment with its upcoming VLE model, which promises an impressive range and advanced features. The company recently demonstrated the capabilities of a VLE prototype by driving it from Stuttgart to Rome, highlighting its efficiency and long-range performance.

The VLE will offer over 311 miles (500 km) of range in pure electric form, making it one of the most efficient electric vans on the market. In addition to the electric variant, Mercedes plans to introduce combustion engine versions as well, providing customers with more options. The VLE, along with a larger VLS variant and dedicated cargo models, is expected to start arriving in 2026.

This new vehicle is the electric counterpart to the upcoming replacement for the V-Class, aiming to set a new standard in luxury and efficiency. To showcase its capabilities, Mercedes conducted a test drive from its headquarters in Stuttgart to Rome, covering 677 miles (1,090 kilometers) with just two quick charging stops. The journey included navigating through the challenging mountain passes of the Alps, where the rear-wheel steering system helped the vehicle maneuver tight turns with ease. The air conditioning was kept at a comfortable 71.6°F (22°C) throughout the trip.

While Mercedes has not provided detailed information about the trip or the vehicle’s average efficiency, it emphasized that this was part of a series of validation routes for its prototypes. The VLE has already completed other long-distance tests, including a journey from Stuttgart to the North Cape in Norway, and is planning another cold-weather test in Sweden this winter. These trials are designed to evaluate the vehicle’s performance under various conditions.

Compared to current electric vans like the EQV, which has a WLTP range rating of 222 miles (363 km), the VLE offers significantly more range. Mercedes claims the VLE will achieve “well over 500 km,” translating to approximately 311 miles.

The VLE represents a shift in Mercedes’ approach to its van lineup. During the press unveiling of the Vision V concept, which previews the VLE, representatives mentioned that the production model would be more akin to an S-Class than a V-Class. This distinction is evident in the concept’s design, which includes luxurious interiors and high-quality seating. Visitors had the opportunity to experience the concept’s exceptional seats firsthand.

The VLE will be built on a new 800-volt platform called VAN.EA, which will support both passenger and commercial variants. Two versions of the platform will be available: VAN.EA-P for passenger vehicles like the VLE and VAN.EA-C for dedicated commercial applications. Alongside the VLE, Mercedes plans to launch a larger and more luxurious variant called the VLS, which will reflect the opulence seen in the concept. There is also the possibility of a Maybach variant in the future.

Mercedes intends to unveil the VLE in 2026, followed by additional models. While specific details about the lineup are not yet available, the company aims to expand its presence in the United States, targeting sales away from the Chrysler Pacifica. To stand out, Mercedes will need to create a distinct image for the VLE, differentiating it from the Metris, the U.S. name for the Euro V-Class, which did not gain much popularity among American buyers.

In addition to the electric versions, combustion engine models will also be available. These will be built on a variant of the platform called VAN.CA, which shares around 70% of its components with the pure EV version and can be assembled on the same production line. As the official launch of the new model approaches, Mercedes is expected to provide more information about its electric van offerings.
