A Journey of Hope and Health Across Uganda and Rwanda
Ululations, flag-waving, and cheers filled the air as excited communities welcomed cyclists who completed a grueling 600-kilometer journey between Uganda and Rwanda. This remarkable event, held from June 23 to 28, 2025, was more than just a cycling challenge—it was a powerful demonstration of solidarity, awareness, and support for critical health interventions across Africa.
Organized by AMREF, the event brought together participants who traversed regions where the organization runs key programs, including Kabale, Kalangala, and Kisoro. The journey culminated in a symbolic handover ceremony at Coco Beach, Entebbe, marking the completion of an inspiring mission.
The cyclists’ efforts were not only physically demanding but also deeply impactful. Through their dedication, they managed to raise €357,713 (approximately sh1.2 billion), which will be used to support various initiatives, including maternal healthcare and water projects. These funds are crucial for improving the lives of countless individuals, especially women and children in underserved communities.
Among the standout participants were Dutch couple Arthure Kleipool and Saine van de Helm, one of the oldest pairs in the event. Their participation added a unique dimension to the journey, as they shared their passion for supporting teenage mothers and providing maternal healthcare in schools.
“We ride to support teenage mothers and provide maternal healthcare in schools,” Kleipool said. Helm added, “AMREF’s work resonates with us. They harness local resources to strengthen healthcare—especially for children and mothers.”
Dr. Patrick Kagurusi, AMREF Uganda’s Country Director, highlighted the cyclists’ contribution toward improving water access in Kalangala, Iganga, and Namayingo. He emphasized how this initiative helps keep girls in school and combat maternal mortality. “I urge all Ugandans to support teenage girls, ensuring they stay in school and have access to essential healthcare,” Kagurusi emphasized.
Joost van Ettro, former Head of Cooperation at the Netherlands Embassy, welcomed the 60 cyclists and commended their commitment to improving the health sector, particularly for adolescent girls. His words reflected the broader recognition of the importance of such initiatives in addressing some of the most pressing challenges in African communities.
The journey itself was a testament to the power of collective action and the impact that individuals can have when they come together for a common cause. From the start in Uganda to the final leg in Rwanda, the cyclists faced numerous challenges, but their determination and spirit shone through.
This event also served as a platform to raise awareness about the critical issues affecting health and education in Africa. By bringing attention to these challenges, the cyclists helped inspire others to get involved and contribute to meaningful change.
The success of the event is a reminder of the importance of partnerships between international organizations, local communities, and individuals who are passionate about making a difference. It highlights the potential for collaborative efforts to drive progress and create lasting impact.
As the cyclists returned home, their journey left a lasting legacy. Their efforts not only raised significant funds but also sparked conversations and inspired action towards improving health outcomes across the continent. The story of this journey is one of hope, resilience, and the enduring power of community.
