Super Falcons Celebrate Historic 10th Title with Trophy Parade in Lagos

The Nigerian women’s national football team, known as the Super Falcons, celebrated their historic 10th African Women’s Championship (WAFCON) victory with a grand trophy parade through the streets of Lagos. The team returned to Nigeria after securing a thrilling 3-2 win over Morocco in the final, marking a record-extending tenth title for the squad.

The parade took place on Wednesday, with the team making their way through key locations across Lagos Island. Starting at Costain, they passed through Eko Bridge, Apogbon, Obalende, Ikoyi Road, and Victoria Island before ending near the Eko Hotel. Fans gathered at various points along the route to cheer on the champions, showing their support for the team that has brought immense pride to the nation.

Before the parade, the Super Falcons arrived in Abuja, the capital city, on Monday, where they were honored by President Bola Tinubu. The president welcomed the team and recognized their achievement with a presidential reception. In addition to the honor, each player received a cash reward of $100,000, while the 11-member technical staff was also awarded $50,000 each. They were also given three-bedroom apartments and a national honor of Officer of the Order of the Niger.

A Thrilling Journey to the Final

The Super Falcons’ journey to the championship was nothing short of remarkable. In the group stage, they dominated their opponents, finishing top of their group with seven points without conceding a single goal. Their performance in the quarter-finals was equally impressive, as they defeated Zambia 5-0, showcasing their attacking prowess.

In the semi-finals, the team faced a tough challenge against South Africa. It was only a late goal from Michelle Alozie that secured a 2-1 victory, highlighting the team’s resilience. The final against Morocco proved to be the most challenging match of the tournament. Trailing 2-0 at halftime, the Falcons staged a stunning comeback, with Esther Okoronkwo, Folashade Ijamilusi, and Jennifer Echegini scoring crucial goals in the second half to clinch the win.

Dominating the Tournament Awards

Beyond their on-field success, the Super Falcons also dominated the individual awards at the tournament. Captain Rasheedat Ajibade was named Player of the Tournament, recognizing her leadership and consistent performances throughout the competition. Goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie was honored as the best keeper, while coach Justine Madugu received the award for Best Coach.

This victory marks the Super Falcons’ 10th continental title, adding to their previous triumphs in 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2010, 2014, 2016, and 2018. Their dominance on the African stage continues to solidify their reputation as one of the most successful teams in women’s football history.

A Celebration of Pride and Achievement

The trophy parade in Lagos was more than just a celebration of a sporting victory—it was a moment of national pride. The team’s journey from the opening matches to the final showcased not only their skill but also their determination and unity. As they paraded through the city, fans cheered loudly, celebrating the hard work and sacrifice that led to this historic achievement.
