Machakos Man Builds Hospital After Father’s Tragic Death

A Journey of Grief and Purpose

Three years ago, Vincent Muli Kituku stood helplessly by his father’s hospital bed, watching him succumb to illness in a facility that lacked the most basic medical supplies. This heart-wrenching experience ignited a deep desire within him to transform the healthcare landscape in his community, ensuring no one else would suffer the same fate.

Today, Kituku is the proud owner of a hospital that serves not only the locals of Kangundo and Matungulu but also people from beyond Machakos county. His journey began with a visit to Kangundo Level Four Hospital in May 2022, which he never expected to be life-changing. What started as a routine visit to see his sick father turned into an inspiration that led to the creation of one of the best hospitals in Kangundo sub-county.

The Inspiration Behind the Investment

In an exclusive interview, Kituku shared how witnessing his father’s final days in a hospital lacking gloves, medicine, and even basic amenities like water and electricity left a profound impact on him. He described a situation where patients were left unattended, with no saline or IVs available. The hospital required patients to purchase their own medication from local pharmacies and bring it back, while there was no food for inpatients.

The lack of backup electricity posed a serious threat, especially for those relying on life-support systems. Kituku recounted how he asked what would happen during a blackout, only to receive a disturbing answer. He watched helplessly as other patients, including his father, suffered silently.

Determined to make a difference, Kituku took immediate action. He cleared several patients’ bills, bought food and medicine, paid for the generator’s repair, and replaced the broken washing machine and dryer. However, this was just the beginning of his mission.

From Grief to Action

Despite having no medical background, Kituku reflected deeply on the struggles of the poor, particularly students, mothers, and the elderly who could not afford better treatment elsewhere. He questioned how many others were dying silently due to lack of access to proper care or financial constraints.

After losing other family members under similar conditions and witnessing students from his school suffer from delayed and poor treatment, Kituku knew something had to change. His resolve to improve healthcare in his community grew stronger.

The Opening of Ngoo Sya Wendo Healthcare Clinic

In June 2024, just over a year after his father’s passing, Kituku purchased a property with nine rooms along the Kangundo-Tala Road. On December 15, the Ngoo Sya Wendo Healthcare Clinic officially opened its doors. The clinic offers a wide range of services, including a pharmacy, dental care, X-ray, ultrasound, ortho trauma, minor surgery, and 24/7 ambulance services.

Kituku emphasized that the clinic is not driven by profit but by a commitment to helping God’s people. Consultation is free, and treatment is affordable, with a focus on serving the elderly and students. Despite facing challenges such as resistance from public health officers and financial hurdles, Kituku remained steadfast, guided by faith.

Future Vision and Legacy

Looking ahead, Kituku envisions transforming the clinic into a fully-fledged hospital with maternity wards, inpatient facilities, and more specialized care units. His goal is to ensure that every patient receives care with dignity and respect.

“The best way to honor those who have left us is to live in a way that honors their lives,” he said. “That’s what this facility is—a tribute of love, born from pain, sustained by purpose.”

Innovations Beyond Healthcare

In addition to his healthcare initiatives, Kituku has also been inspired by the stories of others in his community. Recently, a college student at Katine Technical Training Institute made headlines for creating hair braids from sisal. This innovation addresses the needs of women allergic to synthetic hair, offering a durable and smooth alternative. The student’s creativity highlights the spirit of innovation and problem-solving that continues to thrive in Machakos.
