Brain Drain Threatens Sokoto’s Healthcare System – Commissioner

Addressing the Brain Drain in Nigeria’s Health Sector

The issue of brain drain has become a growing concern in Nigeria, particularly within the health sector. Prof. Attahiru Ahmed Sifawa, the Sokoto State Commissioner for Science and Technology, has spoken out about this trend, highlighting how many professionals who benefited from subsidized education are choosing to leave the country instead of contributing to its development.

In an exclusive interview, Sifawa emphasized that the Sokoto State government has made significant investments in human capital development, especially through science-based institutions. These institutions have produced skilled health workers who serve not only in Sokoto but across Nigeria and even abroad. “Doctors, lab technicians, and other professionals serving across Nigeria and even outside the country were groomed in our institutions,” he stated.

Sifawa reiterated that the goal of these institutions is to produce capable human resources that support the public health system. However, he expressed concern over the fact that many of these professionals opt to leave Nigeria after receiving education at little or no cost. “Many of our citizens benefit from highly subsidized or free education, yet they migrate abroad rather than stay to help fix the system,” he noted. He added that if everyone remained in the country and worked together, Nigeria could overcome its challenges.

Infrastructure Challenges and Government Efforts

Addressing the infrastructure challenges in the health sector, Sifawa acknowledged that the lack of modern equipment contributes to the migration of professionals. However, he also highlighted that the current administration under Governor Ahmed Aliyu is taking steps to change the narrative. “The governor has approved the procurement of advanced medical equipment. During one of our recent executive council meetings, approvals were granted for the purchase of vital hospital equipment. These efforts are aimed at strengthening our health infrastructure,” he revealed.

While Sokoto has not yet begun local production of health or scientific equipment, Sifawa mentioned that this remains a long-term goal. “Local production of scientific and medical equipment requires greater investment and development. For now, our focus is on procurement and building the foundation for future technological progress,” he explained.

The Role of Patriotism and Collaboration

Sifawa stressed that patriotism, commitment, and collaborative efforts are essential to reversing the tide of brain drain and rebuilding Nigeria’s critical public sectors. He called on professionals to consider the impact of their decisions on the nation’s development. “If we all remain here and work together, we can overcome our challenges,” he said.

The commissioner also emphasized the importance of creating an environment where professionals feel valued and supported. This includes improving working conditions, providing adequate resources, and ensuring that there are opportunities for growth and advancement within the country.

Looking Ahead

As Nigeria continues to grapple with the challenges of brain drain and underdeveloped infrastructure, the role of state governments like Sokoto’s becomes increasingly important. By investing in education, improving healthcare facilities, and fostering a sense of national pride among professionals, the country can begin to retain its talent and build a stronger, more resilient health sector.

Sifawa’s comments highlight the need for a multi-faceted approach to address the root causes of brain drain. This includes not only financial incentives but also a cultural shift that encourages professionals to see the value in contributing to their home country. With sustained effort and collaboration, Nigeria can create a future where its brightest minds choose to stay and build a better tomorrow.
