Edo Enhances Health Planning via Digital Platform

Edo State Launches Initiative to Enhance Health Systems with Digital Tools

Edo State has taken a significant step toward improving its healthcare infrastructure by introducing a new web-based dashboard aimed at enhancing transparency, data collection, and strategic planning. This initiative was highlighted during the opening of a four-day leadership and capacity-building workshop in Benin City, where officials emphasized the importance of modernizing health systems to meet future challenges.

The event, titled “Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative Leadership, Health Systems Strengthening and Planning Workshop,” brought together key stakeholders from various health agencies. The workshop focused on equipping healthcare managers with the tools and knowledge necessary to implement the 2026 Annual Operational Plan effectively.

Dr Cyril Oshiomhole, the Commissioner for Health in Edo State, expressed his confidence in the state’s ability to improve health outcomes through this initiative. He noted that the training was designed to strengthen the overall health system and ensure better planning across all levels of service delivery. Although he could not attend in person, his message was delivered by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Dr Stanley Ehiarimwian, who reiterated the administration’s commitment to supporting the health sector.

The introduction of the web-based dashboard is expected to play a crucial role in streamlining data collection and analysis. This digital tool will allow for real-time monitoring of health indicators, enabling more informed decision-making and greater accountability within the system. According to the commissioner, the dashboard will serve as a critical component in ensuring that health services are both efficient and equitable.

In addition to the technical aspects of the initiative, the workshop also focused on developing leadership and problem-solving skills among participants. Dr Omijie Godswill, the Sector Wide Approach Desk Officer, emphasized that the training would help programme officers adopt a systems thinking approach. This method encourages a holistic view of healthcare challenges, allowing for more sustainable and evidence-based solutions.

Loretta Iruobe, the Director of Planning, Research, and Statistics, highlighted the importance of involving all health agencies in the planning process. She explained that the training was designed to ensure that every stakeholder had a clear understanding of their role in achieving the goals set out for the 2026 operational plan.

The workshop featured a mix of virtual and in-person sessions, with experts from different fields contributing their insights. Ashiru Abubakar, the Governance and Sub-National Engagement Lead, provided virtual lectures on governance and engagement strategies. Meanwhile, Esther Aigimenlen delivered physical lectures focusing on health systems frameworks and the importance of systems thinking in effective planning.

Participants left the event with a renewed sense of purpose and a deeper understanding of how to contribute to the long-term improvement of Edo State’s health sector. The combination of technological innovation, leadership development, and collaborative planning sets a strong foundation for future progress.

This initiative reflects a broader movement toward using data-driven approaches to address public health challenges. By investing in both human capital and digital infrastructure, Edo State is positioning itself as a leader in health system reform. As the state moves forward, the lessons learned from this workshop will be instrumental in shaping the next phase of healthcare development.
