Gaming Giant Secures Sh1.12 Billion Kenya Premier League Deal

A New Era for Kenyan Football

SportPesa, a leading online gaming company, has entered into a landmark 10-year partnership with the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) to sponsor the Kenyan Premier League (KPL). This deal, valued at Sh1.12 billion, marks a significant step in revitalizing Kenyan football and restoring its former glory.

The agreement was officially signed on July 31, 2025, at the Serena Hotel in Nairobi. It grants SportPesa exclusive title rights to the KPL, making them the official sponsor of Kenya’s top-tier football league. This partnership represents a return for SportPesa to the KPL, as they previously sponsored the league from July 2015 to November 2019.

The previous sponsorship came to an end after the Finance Bill 2017 was enacted, which imposed a uniform 35% tax rate on all gambling revenue, including betting, gaming, lotteries, and prize competitions. This led to the withdrawal of several sponsorships, including SportPesa’s.

Rebuilding and Revitalization

SportPesa CEO Ronald Karauri expressed his excitement about the new partnership, highlighting the company’s commitment to supporting Kenyan football. “We are thrilled to announce our partnership with the Football Kenya Federation, building on the success we achieved together in the past. Football in Kenya can reclaim its lost glory, and we are starting this journey today,” he said.

Karauri emphasized that the company is in a rebuilding phase and believes in the power of strong partnerships. “This is a leap of faith we have taken as a company. It is also a rallying call for other corporates to join us and collectively achieve the dreams we yearn for.”

Financial Allocation and Future Plans

A significant portion of the sponsorship will be directed toward the clubs in the FKF Premier League. Specifically, 60% of the funds will be distributed as grants to the clubs, while 40% will be allocated to administrative and competition operational costs. The initial payment for the upcoming 2025/2026 season will be Sh85 million, with more details to be unveiled in a special launch event.

Karauri also mentioned that the company is working closely with the FKF to ensure the long-term success of the partnership. “We wish you all the best as Kenya comes together to rally behind the Harambee Stars as they compete in the CHAN tournament,” he added.

FKF’s Perspective

FKF President Hussein Mohammed praised SportPesa for their continued support and belief in the vision for Kenyan football. “A transformative chapter begins for Kenyan football. We extend our gratitude to SportPesa for their belief in our vision through this partnership,” he said.

Mohammed acknowledged the challenges faced by the FKF in attracting private sector investment but viewed this partnership as a crucial step forward. “After enduring challenges in attracting the private sector, FKF sees this partnership as a crucial advancement in attracting more collaborations,” he added.

Looking Ahead

With this new sponsorship, both SportPesa and the FKF are optimistic about the future of Kenyan football. The partnership not only provides financial support but also serves as a symbol of hope and unity for fans and players alike. As the KPL prepares for the upcoming season, the collaboration between SportPesa and the FKF is expected to bring renewed energy and enthusiasm to the sport.

This deal is a testament to the potential of partnerships in driving positive change and fostering growth in the world of sports. With the right support and dedication, Kenyan football is poised for a bright and promising future.
