Overview of the 2025-2026 Medical Internship Program in Uganda
The Ministry of Health has officially announced the deployment of medical interns for the upcoming 2025-2026 internship cycle. This initiative is set to take place across various national, regional, and general hospitals throughout the country, ensuring that graduates gain practical experience in diverse healthcare settings.
According to a circular issued by Dr. Charles Olaro, Director General of Health Services, the internship period will run from August 3, 2025, to July 31, 2026. This timeline allows for a structured and comprehensive training program that aligns with the requirements of professional health councils in Uganda.
Key Dates and Requirements
Graduates specializing in medicine, pharmacy, and nursing are required to report to their designated internship centers on August 3, 2025. Before starting their clinical duties, these interns will participate in orientation and induction sessions designed to prepare them for the challenges ahead.
Hospital administrators have been instructed to make immediate arrangements to ensure the timely start of the internship program. Additionally, facilities are expected to submit lists of reporting interns by August 15 to facilitate the processing of allowances and other necessary administrative tasks.
Eligibility and Exclusions
The internship program includes eligible graduates from both the 2024 and 2025 academic years. Participating institutions include Makerere University, Mbarara University of Science and Technology, Kampala International University, Gulu University, Kabale University, Soroti University, Busitema University, Bishop Stuart University, as well as international institutions such as Wenzhou Medical University.
However, it’s important to note that nurses and midwives upgrading from diploma to degree level have been excluded from this year’s program. This decision was made following a resolution by the Human Capital Development Program Interministerial Committee on Health and Education.
Major Internship Sites and Programs
Several key hospitals have been identified as major internship sites, including Aber Hospital, Anaka General Hospital, Lira Regional Referral Hospital, and Arua Regional Referral Hospital. These facilities will each receive dozens of interns across various programs, including Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBChB), Bachelor of Pharmacy (BPharm), and Bachelor of Nursing Science (BNS).
Stakeholder Involvement and Coordination
To ensure effective supervision and compliance, the Ministry of Health has shared the circular with all relevant stakeholders, including ministers, professional councils, and the Uganda Pharmacy Board. This collaborative approach aims to streamline the internship process and address any potential challenges proactively.
Addressing Past Concerns
This announcement comes in response to recent concerns raised by medical graduates regarding delays in internship placements and allowance disbursements. Health officials have emphasized that stricter timelines and improved coordination with internship centers will help resolve past inefficiencies. This is particularly important for sustaining the pipeline of qualified health workers, especially in rural and underserved regions.
Legal and Regulatory Context
Internship remains a statutory requirement for licensing by Uganda’s professional health councils. As such, the successful completion of this program is essential for graduates seeking to practice in the country.
Availability of Placement Information
The full list of placements is now available on the Ministry of Health’s notice board and is being circulated to all participating hospitals for immediate implementation. This ensures transparency and enables interns to plan accordingly.
By implementing these measures, the Ministry of Health aims to create a more efficient and effective internship system that benefits both the graduates and the healthcare sector as a whole.
