Kagame Reveals Vision for Kigali’s Sports City

A Vision for Sports and Economic Growth in Rwanda

President Paul Kagame recently shared the inspiration behind Kigali’s sports city, a project that has become a symbol of Rwanda’s commitment to development through sports. The initiative includes major facilities such as Amahoro Stadium, BK Arena, and Zaria Courts. This vision was highlighted during the official opening of Zaria Court, a $25 million sports and entertainment complex in Kigali. Built by Masai Ujiri, a former NBA player and founder of Giants of Africa, the complex features sports courts, an 80-room hotel, retail spaces, co-working areas, and a podcast hub.

During a conversation with Ujiri, President Kagame was asked about his vision for the sports city. He reflected on his own background, stating, “I wasn’t a sportsman of any standard. I don’t have very good ideas to do business.” However, he emphasized that his role is not to be a businessman but to support others in their endeavors. “I can create an environment for those who can, so they can succeed,” he said. Although he never played sports competitively, Kagame expressed that he has always felt a deep connection to sports. He acknowledged what he missed by not participating but also spoke about how his experiences shaped his perspective.

Kagame explained that the idea for the sports city came from discussions about where to start and what could be done in Rwanda. He emphasized that sports have already made a significant impact on Rwanda’s economy, creating jobs and attracting global attention. The facilities like the arena and stadium have become focal points for community engagement and economic activity.

When asked how other leaders can be encouraged to invest in sports, Kagame highlighted the importance of showcasing real examples. “Leaders are more likely to invest in sports when they see real, working examples,” he said. His role, according to him, is to speak out and demonstrate what is possible. He pointed to the success of sports initiatives in Rwanda as a model for other countries to follow.

Kagame also spoke about the potential of Africa’s youth, emphasizing that he does not think about borders when considering them. He called them the continent’s biggest asset and urged continued investment in their development. “Africa needs to believe in the giant that it is,” he said, reinforcing the importance of empowering young people through education and opportunity.

Masai Ujiri praised President Kagame for his visionary leadership and commitment to using sports as a tool for economic growth. “When you talk about vision, you talk about leadership, you talk about engaging people, partnerships, everything you can think of in bringing people together, that is what President Kagame stands for,” Ujiri said. He added that Kagame has recognized sports as a business and economic driver capable of transforming countries and the continent.

Ujiri emphasized that sports infrastructure like Zaria Court builds communities, creates value, and contributes to the economy—something often overlooked in Africa. The launch ceremony, part of the week-long Giants of Africa Festival, was attended by notable figures such as Aliko Dangote, Africa’s wealthiest man, and Amadou Gallo Fall, President of the Basketball Africa League. These events highlight the growing importance of sports in driving development and fostering international collaboration.
