Lioness Star Surges as Second Favorite for BBC Sports Personality Award

Rise of a New Hero: Hannah Hampton’s Journey to Stardom

Hannah Hampton, a key player in the Lionesses, has emerged as a strong contender for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award. Her exceptional performance in the Women’s Euro 2025 final has catapulted her into the spotlight, making her one of the top favorites for the prestigious honor.

In a dramatic showdown against Spain, the Lionesses secured their victory with a 3-1 win in the penalty shootout. The match ended in a tense 1-1 draw after extra time, showcasing the high stakes and intense competition. Hampton played a pivotal role, saving crucial penalties that ultimately led to England’s triumph. Her ability to perform under pressure was evident as she denied both Mariona Caldentey and Ballon d’Or winner Aitana Bonmati from the spot, followed by Salma Paralluelo missing her shot.

This marks a significant milestone for Hampton, who previously served as an understudy to Mary Earps during England’s successful campaigns in the 2022 Euros and the 2023 Women’s World Cup. Earps herself was awarded the BBC Sports Personality of the Year in 2023 after a remarkable save in the World Cup final against Spain, even though her team fell short.

Hampton’s recent achievements have not gone unnoticed. According to Betfair, she is now joint second-favorite at 5/1 to win the SPOTY award, trailing only Rory McIlroy, who remains the favorite at Evens. McIlroy’s stellar season, which included winning The Masters in April, has solidified his position as the leading contender.

In addition to McIlroy, Formula One star Lando Norris is also priced at 5/1. Norris recently celebrated a significant victory at Silverstone, winning the British Grand Prix for the first time in his career. He is currently just 16 points behind his teammate Oscar Piastri in the race for the world drivers’ championship.

Other notable contenders include England captain Lucy Bronze, who is priced at 15/2, and fellow Lioness Leah Williamson, at 16/1. Teenage darts sensation Luke Littler is also in the running, with odds of 9/1.
