A New Era for Legal Professionals in Kenya: Introducing ‘Wakili Medicover’
In a significant move aimed at enhancing the well-being of legal practitioners, the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has introduced an exclusive health insurance scheme called ‘Wakili Medicover’. This initiative is a collaborative effort between the LSK, Octagon Africa Financial Services, and Britam General Insurance. The goal is to provide affordable and comprehensive healthcare coverage tailored specifically for advocates across the nation.
During the official launch event held in Nairobi, LSK President Faith Odhiambo emphasized the importance of prioritizing personal health amidst the increasing demands of the legal profession. She highlighted that this new scheme is a crucial step in addressing financial challenges related to health issues among members. Odhiambo also noted that the initiative aligns with the LSK’s broader commitment to member welfare and overall well-being.
“This is a win for our members — a tangible initiative that aligns with our focus on wellness, accessibility, and inclusion,” Odhiambo stated.
Comprehensive Coverage Designed for Legal Practitioners
‘Wakili Medicover’ is crafted to meet the unique needs of legal professionals. The health plan offers inpatient coverage ranging from KES 500,000 to KES 10 million per family. Additionally, it includes free maternity, dental, and optical services. The plan also features shorter waiting periods for chronic and pre-existing conditions, along with coverage for specialized care, ICU services, overseas referrals, and last expense.
The product was developed by Octagon Insurance Brokers Ltd, a subsidiary of Octagon Africa, and underwritten by Britam. Both organizations have expressed their commitment to delivering long-term value through this tailored approach.
“Lawyers face unique pressures that often compromise their health. This cover is not just a policy — it’s a support system,” said Fred Waswa, CEO of Octagon Africa.
Britam General Insurance CEO James Mbithi echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the need for customized insurance solutions that address the specific challenges faced by legal professionals. He pointed out that the high-stress nature of the job, coupled with long working hours, often makes it difficult for lawyers to engage with standard health insurance products.
A Transformative Step for Professional Groups
The introduction of ‘Wakili Medicover’ is anticipated to be a turning point for professional groups in Kenya, especially those operating in high-stress sectors like law. It sets a precedent for how such groups can approach access to health insurance and financial protection.
By offering a health plan that is both inclusive and responsive to the unique demands of the legal profession, the LSK, Octagon Africa, and Britam are paving the way for a more supportive environment for legal practitioners. This initiative not only addresses immediate health concerns but also contributes to the long-term sustainability and well-being of the legal community in Kenya.
As the scheme gains traction, it is expected to serve as a model for other professional bodies seeking to enhance the quality of life for their members through innovative and targeted health insurance solutions.
