Growth and Development in the South-West Zone of Nigerian Cricket
The South-West zone of Nigeria has witnessed remarkable progress in the development of cricket, driven by the efforts of key stakeholders. Tayo Atoloye, the South-West zonal representative on the Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF) board, has expressed his enthusiasm about the strides made in the region. His insights highlight significant achievements in infrastructure, grassroots engagement, and policy reforms.
Atoloye, a former Nigeria international cricketer, emphasized that the region has seen substantial improvements in training facilities. The construction and renovation of training grounds have been prioritized, ensuring that each state in the zone has access to functional cricket nets and playing areas. This initiative was carried out in collaboration with local authorities, state sports commissions, the NCF, and community partners.
One of the most notable accomplishments is the establishment of Nigeria’s first indoor cricket training center, The Cricket Lab, located at the TBS Oval in Lagos. This facility has not only provided a dedicated space for training but has also contributed significantly to the development of players across the region.
In addition to infrastructure, Atoloye highlighted the importance of equipment distribution. The region has organized multiple donation drives, providing essential kits such as bats, pads, and balls to schools and clubs. These efforts have helped to make cricket more accessible and affordable for aspiring players.
Another key area of focus has been the professional development of coaches and umpires. The South-West zone has sponsored elite coaches and umpires for ICC Level 2 and 3 certification programs. This investment in human capital ensures that the region can maintain high standards of coaching and officiating.
Atoloye has also played a crucial role in organizing major events. He chaired both the technical and media committees during the ICC events hosted by Nigeria in 2024 and 2025. His work on these events has earned recognition from the global cricket body, further cementing the region’s growing influence in the sport.
Looking ahead, Atoloye outlined several plans for the South-West zone. These include launching a zonal high-performance program, expanding competitive tournaments, and enhancing women’s cricket. The region also aims to intensify coach and umpire certification drives to ensure sustainable growth.
Key initiatives planned for the future include:
- Zonal High-Performance Programme: A structured approach to identify and nurture talent within the region.
- Expansion of Competitive Tournaments: Increasing opportunities for players to compete at various levels.
- Enhancement of Women’s Cricket: Promoting gender equality and creating more avenues for female players.
- Coach and Umpire Certification Drives: Ensuring that the region has well-trained professionals to support the sport’s development.
These efforts reflect a commitment to building a strong foundation for cricket in the South-West zone. With continued investment in infrastructure, education, and competition, the region is well-positioned to play a pivotal role in the future of Nigerian cricket.
