Nigeria’s Auto Sector Drives Economic Growth — Oyebanji

The Automotive Sector as a Catalyst for Economic Growth in Nigeria

Ekiti Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, has emphasized the significant potential of Nigeria’s automotive sector to drive economic growth and sustainable development. He highlighted that this industry should serve as a hub for creative and innovative ideas, particularly in the technological domain, to meet the demands of the 21st century.

During the warm spring resort Ikogosi-Ekiti event, Oyebanji officially opened the 2025 Strategic Management Meeting of the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), which carried the theme “Fostering Creativity and Innovation for Continuous Performance Improvement.” His speech underscored the importance of innovation and strategic planning in ensuring the competitiveness of the Nigerian automotive sector on the global stage.

The governor commended the leadership of NADDC for its collaboration with the state in advancing the automotive sector. He reiterated the administration’s commitment to capitalizing on opportunities within the sector, aligning with the six-pillar agenda of the government.

Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Habibat Adubiaro, Oyebanji encouraged participants to develop innovative ideas that could positively impact the country’s automotive sector. He pointed out that this sector holds great promise for creating job opportunities for the youth.

Oyebanji stated, “As we navigate the complexities of the 21st century, the automotive sector stands as a critical pillar of economic growth, technological advancement, and sustainable development. It is a sector that demands constant innovation, strategic planning, and a forward-thinking approach.”

He added, “Your discussions on topics such as localization, research and development, skills acquisition, and sustainable practices will undoubtedly contribute to the growth and competitiveness of the Nigerian automotive sector on the global stage. We are actively fostering an environment that encourages investment in sectors like automotive technology, recognizing its potential to create jobs, boost economic activity, and enhance the overall well-being of our citizens.”

NADDC’s Commitment to Innovation and Diversification

The Director General of NADDC, Oluwemimp Joseph Osanipin, explained that the retreat was designed to reflect on the past activities of the council and to offer innovative ideas for a sustainable and prosperous future. He emphasized the council’s commitment to fulfilling the renewed hope agenda of President Bola Tinubu, focusing on the diversification of the economy through innovation and digitization.

Osanipin outlined three key goals for the retreat: first, to explore how innovation and creativity can be used to enhance service delivery; second, to exchange views on pressing concerns affecting their work; and third, to strengthen collaboration and relationships within the council.

He noted, “Our commitment should be geared towards the actualization of the Priority point number seven (7) of the Renewed Hope Agenda of the President Ahmed Tinubu-led Administration, which is to ‘Accelerate Diversification through industrialization, digitization, creative arts, manufacturing, and innovation.’ It is instructive to point out that achieving the aforementioned Priority area is key to unlocking Priority Area 8—Improving governance for effective service delivery as well as other Priority areas in the agenda.”

Cultivating a Culture of Innovation

The Director of Human Resources in NADDC, Mrs. Ronke Amodu, emphasized the necessity of the retreat in cultivating a culture of innovation for effective service delivery and making strategic investment strategies for the council’s future. She highlighted the importance of continuous improvement and the need for proactive approaches in addressing challenges within the sector.

Through these initiatives, the NADDC aims to ensure that the automotive sector remains a driving force for economic growth, technological advancement, and sustainable development in Nigeria. By fostering innovation, collaboration, and strategic planning, the council seeks to position the sector for long-term success and global competitiveness.
