SSNIT Embarks on a New Era of Pension Management in Ghana
The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) is taking significant steps to redefine the future of pensions in Ghana. With a strong emphasis on transparency, improved employer engagement, and enhanced digital services, the organization is working towards building a more inclusive and sustainable social security system.
At a recent Employers’ Breakfast Meeting held on July 16, 2025, Director General Mr Kwesi Afreh Biney outlined the vision for a stronger and more resilient pension system. The event brought together business leaders, members of the Ghana Employers’ Association, and media representatives, highlighting SSNIT’s commitment to strengthening partnerships with key stakeholders.
Mr Biney emphasized that regular communication and collaboration are essential for aligning all parties with the Trust’s long-term goals. He stressed that this approach not only ensures smoother operations but also helps in shaping a more sustainable pension system for future generations.
One of the main priorities for SSNIT is improving compliance among employers. Over the past five years, the Trust has successfully increased employer compliance from 60% to nearly 80%. The next target is to reach a 90% compliance rate by the end of 2026.
“This is not just about enforcement,” Mr Biney said. “It’s about partnership for the greater good of contributors and pensioners.” He added that through education, engagement, and digital convenience, SSNIT is creating an environment where compliance is easier and more accessible.
To support these efforts, the Trust is investing in advanced digital platforms designed to simplify the registration, payment, and customer service processes for employers. According to Mr Biney, SSNIT is not just going digital—it is transforming into a service-centered organization that adds value to both employers and contributors.
A major innovation in this transformation is the planned launch of a fully operational virtual branch by September 2025. Unlike current digital systems that rely on follow-ups from physical departments, the virtual branch will offer real-time support from trained personnel, ensuring swift responses and a seamless user experience.
“This is about bringing SSNIT to your doorstep, whether by phone, USSD, or internet,” Mr Biney explained. “We want employers and members to have full access to our services anytime, anywhere.”
In addition to digital advancements, SSNIT is also enhancing its transparency mechanisms. Members now receive quarterly statements and are encouraged to check for any discrepancies or missing contributions. This initiative fosters a culture where contributors actively participate in safeguarding their future benefits.
Monthly compliance monitoring allows SSNIT to identify and support employers who may be falling behind. Legal enforcement is used only as a last resort, with dialogue and support being the first response to non-compliance.
Mr Alexander Frempong, CEO of the Ghana Employers’ Association, echoed Mr Biney’s sentiments and pledged continued support for SSNIT’s initiatives. He called on employers to take voluntary compliance seriously and to embrace the Trust’s new digital tools.
“The world is moving digital, and SSNIT is leading the way in making it easier for businesses to do the right thing,” Mr Frempong said. “This is a partnership, and we all have a role to play.”
He further highlighted the importance of ensuring that contributions are made on time and employees are registered promptly to guarantee the sustainability of the Trust and the welfare of pensioners.
