Expanding Mental Health Support Through Podcasts
UNICEF has taken a significant step in supporting the mental health of young people by launching the Romanian-language version of its podcast On My Mind (known as În Mintea mea). This initiative, developed in collaboration with Spotify, aims to provide accessible resources for adolescents and young adults facing mental health challenges. The podcast is part of a broader effort by UNICEF to address emotional well-being and reduce barriers to mental health services.
A Platform for Emotional Well-Being
The Romanian version of În Mintea mea is designed to complement the work that UNICEF has been doing in Romania. It focuses on promoting emotional health among young people, especially those who may not have access to traditional mental health support. The podcast consists of eight episodes, all available for free, offering practical exercises and information that help listeners maintain their mental well-being on a daily basis.
One of the key aspects of this project is that it was created in partnership with young people themselves. The content is based on real data about the mental health needs of adolescents, ensuring that the topics covered are relevant and impactful. This collaborative approach helps make the podcast more relatable and effective for its target audience.
Addressing Mental Health Challenges in Romania
According to Anna Riatti, the UNICEF Representative in Romania, mental health issues affect a large number of children and adolescents in the country. One in three teenagers between the ages of 11 and 15 experiences sadness at least once a week. Despite the importance of mental health services, many young people struggle to access them due to various obstacles.
“UNICEF aims to close these gaps, and the global partnership with Spotify is an important step forward,” said Riatti. The collaboration brings together Spotify’s platform and content expertise with UNICEF’s experience in implementing mental health programs, creating a powerful tool for change.
A Safe Space for Young Voices
Andreea-Denisa, a 16-year-old member of the Romanian Children’s Board supported by UNICEF, shared her perspective on the podcast: “În mintea mea is truly a safe space where you can feel understood without being stuck in your own bubble. Rather, you are encouraged to step out of it and show that you are strong by asking for help.”
This sentiment highlights the importance of creating spaces where young people feel heard and supported. The podcast encourages open conversations about mental health, helping to break down stigma and promote a culture of seeking help when needed.
Global Reach with Local Adaptation
The On My Mind podcast was first launched in Ukrainian, Polish, and English in June 2023. Its initial goal was to support young people affected by the war in Ukraine. In 2024, Spanish and Portuguese versions were introduced, reaching audiences across Latin America. Each version is adapted to reflect the specific context of the country where it is launched, with input from local youth.
This approach ensures that the content remains relevant and resonates with the unique challenges faced by different communities. By combining a global perspective with local insights, the podcast continues to expand its impact and reach more young people around the world.
Future Goals and Impact
As the podcast continues to grow, it aims to improve young people’s understanding of mental health, influence their attitudes, and encourage positive behaviors. The eight episodes in the first season cover a range of topics, from managing stress to building resilience, all tailored to the needs of the Romanian audience.
Through this initiative, UNICEF and Spotify are working together to create a more supportive environment for young people, empowering them to take charge of their mental health and seek the help they need. The success of În Mintea mea could serve as a model for future projects aimed at addressing mental health challenges on a global scale.
