Vietnam’s Top Airports Lag in On-Time Performance

Key Findings from the 2025 World’s Best Airports Ranking

In the latest “World’s Best Airports 2025” ranking, Vietnam’s two most significant airports, Noi Bai and Tan Son Nhat, have been evaluated with relatively low scores for their on-time performance. The ranking was published by AirHelp, a company known for its global expertise in flight compensation services. This year’s evaluation considered the passenger experience at 250 airports around the world, focusing on three main factors: on-time performance, customer opinion, and the quality of food and retail services.

Noi Bai Airport in Hanoi placed 242nd out of the 250 airports assessed, with an overall score of 6.71 out of 10. In contrast, Tan Son Nhat Airport in Ho Chi Minh City ranked 248th, achieving a score of 6.21. These results mark a notable drop compared to previous years, as neither airport appeared in last year’s list, which only included 100 airports.

Performance Breakdown

Noi Bai Airport received specific scores for different aspects of its operations. It earned a 6.4 for on-time performance, 7.2 for customer opinion, and 7.1 for the quality of food, beverages, and shopping options available. Despite these relatively strong ratings in customer satisfaction and food services, the airport’s punctuality score significantly affected its overall standing.

Tan Son Nhat Airport had a more challenging performance, scoring 6.1 for on-time performance, which is nearly the lowest in the entire ranking. Although it managed to receive higher scores for customer satisfaction and food services than the U.S.-based Daniel K. Inouye International Airport, which ranked 51st, its poor punctuality rating held it back from a better position.

On-time performance was given the highest weight in the overall score, accounting for 60% of the total. Customer satisfaction and food and beverage quality each contributed 20% to the final result.

Global Rankings and Top Performers

This year’s top-ranked airport is Cape Town International Airport in South Africa, which achieved an impressive overall score of 8.57. Doha Hamad Airport in Qatar secured the second position, showcasing strong performance across all evaluated categories.

The ranking highlights the importance of punctuality in determining an airport’s overall quality. While some airports may excel in customer service or retail offerings, those that consistently meet or exceed expected arrival and departure times are more likely to rank highly.

Implications for Travelers and Airport Management

The findings from this ranking serve as a valuable indicator for travelers looking to choose airports with reliable schedules and efficient services. For airport management, the results underscore the need to address delays and improve operational efficiency to enhance passenger satisfaction.

Airports that perform well in on-time performance often see higher customer satisfaction, as timely departures and arrivals reduce stress and improve the overall travel experience. Additionally, maintaining high standards in food and retail services can further elevate an airport’s reputation and attract more passengers.

As the aviation industry continues to evolve, airports must focus on balancing efficiency, customer care, and service quality to remain competitive on the global stage. The 2025 ranking provides a clear benchmark for improvement and offers insights into how airports can better meet the expectations of modern travelers.
