West Ham Targets Onyedika After US Tour

West Ham’s Strong Interest in Raphael Onyedika

West Ham United are reportedly stepping up their efforts to sign Nigerian midfielder Raphael Onyedika following the completion of their pre-season tour in the United States. The 24-year-old has become a vital player for Club Brugge in the Belgian Pro League and is now seen as the Hammers’ top target for midfield reinforcement this summer.

According to Belgian publication Voetbalnieuws, West Ham has made Onyedika their primary focus for midfield upgrades. The report highlights that sources close to Club Brugge indicate the club is not entirely opposed to selling the player if they receive an attractive offer. This contrasts with last summer when the club blocked his exit, but now there appears to be more flexibility.

Despite the increasing transfer speculation, Onyedika is reportedly taking a cautious approach regarding his future. Voetbalnieuws noted that while Club Brugge is open to a transfer, especially after previously blocking a move for him, the player is not in a hurry and is waiting for the right opportunity.

“This is not turning into a long-term saga like the one involving Jashari,” the report said. “This is mainly due to a lack of strong interest from Europe’s top leagues so far, although that could change soon. West Ham, in particular, is showing significant interest.”

Although no official bids have been confirmed, it is expected that once West Ham concludes its commercial and sporting activities in the US, the club will move forward with formal negotiations. Reports suggest that Club Brugge would consider offers around €20 million for Onyedika.

“West Ham is currently in the United States for a pre-season tour and commercial engagements,” added Voetbalnieuws. “Once their training camp ends, the club is expected to intensify its pursuit of the Nigerian player. It is understood that Club Brugge is holding out for a fee in the region of €20 million.”

Onyedika joined Club Brugge in August 2022 from Danish side Midtjylland for just under €10 million, making him the club’s third-most expensive signing at the time. Although he initially lost his place under former manager Ronny Deila, he regained his position under new head coach Nicky Hayen and played a crucial role in the team’s title challenge last season.

West Ham’s interest in Onyedika is expected to grow even further following the recent departure of key midfielder Mohammed Kudus, which has created more space for midfield reinforcements. The Hammers are looking to strengthen their squad as they prepare for the upcoming season, and Onyedika’s potential arrival could provide them with a much-needed boost in the middle of the park.

With both clubs showing willingness to negotiate, the situation surrounding Onyedika’s future is likely to develop quickly in the coming weeks. If the terms align, the Nigerian midfielder could soon be making the move to London, adding depth and quality to West Ham’s midfield.
