Widow’s Urgent Call for Medical Help as Condition Deteriorates

A Widow’s Plea for Medical Aid Amidst Tragic Circumstances

Fatuma Nanfuka, the widow of the late Kawempe North legislator Muhammad Ssegirinya, has made a heartfelt appeal to the government and well-wishers for urgent medical support as she battles a severe kidney-related illness. Her condition has raised concerns about the lack of institutional care for the families of former public figures, especially those who have lost their loved ones in recent years.

Currently bedridden at her sister Miriam Kasirye’s home, Nanfuka has been in critical condition since mid-June. According to Kasirye, her sister’s health has significantly deteriorated, and she has yet to receive any medical assistance from the government or Parliament since the passing of her husband. The absence of support has left the family in a vulnerable position, with no clear path to access necessary treatment.

“She has never been the same since his death. She has been in a terrible state since June 13,” Kasirye shared during an interview on Sanyuka TV. “She can barely talk. She came here and told me she was unwell, and since then, her condition has worsened. It’s me who has been taking care of her.”

In a frail voice and visibly weak, Nanfuka described the extent of her suffering. “I have too much pain in my lower abdomen,” she said, highlighting the physical toll of her illness. Her words reflect the desperation of someone who is struggling to cope with both her health and the emotional burden of loss.

Kasirye has called on the government, Parliament, and Speaker Anita Among to intervene and provide the necessary medical aid. “It’s heartbreaking that the wife of a former legislator is in this condition and has been abandoned,” she said. “We appeal to any relevant authority, especially the Speaker Anita Among and Members of Parliament, to step in and help Fatuma get treatment so she can recover and take care of her children.”

Muhammad Ssegirinya, known for his activism and outspoken political views, passed away in January 2025 after a prolonged illness. His death left behind widows, including Fatuma Nanfuka, and sparked concerns about the welfare of his family. Since his passing, there have been growing worries about the lack of institutional support for his surviving spouses and children.

The situation highlights a broader issue regarding the care and protection of families of public figures. While some may assume that such individuals would receive special attention, the reality often falls short of expectations. This case underscores the need for more comprehensive policies that ensure the well-being of families who have lost their primary breadwinners.

As the community continues to watch this unfolding story, many are calling for action. They believe that the government must take responsibility for the welfare of those who have contributed to public life, even after their passing. This includes ensuring access to healthcare, financial support, and other essential services for their families.

Nanfuka’s plight serves as a reminder of the human cost behind political and social issues. It calls for greater empathy and a more proactive approach from authorities to address the needs of vulnerable groups. Until then, her family remains in a difficult position, hoping for the support that they desperately need.
