Yobe State Launches Equity Programme to Expand Healthcare Access
Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, has announced the launch of the State Equity Programme, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at providing health insurance coverage to over 38,000 vulnerable women and under-five children across the state. This move underscores the administration’s commitment to improving primary healthcare services and ensuring that essential medical care is accessible to all residents.
During a high-level stakeholder meeting in Damaturu, the governor emphasized the importance of healthcare as a cornerstone of socio-economic development. He highlighted the progress made in recent years and outlined new strategies to further expand healthcare coverage, especially for marginalized groups.
The meeting brought together a diverse group of participants, including royal highnesses, religious leaders, development partners, Ministry of Health staff, members of the Primary Health Care (PHC) Management Board, and representatives from civil society organizations. This collaborative approach reflects the shared goal of enhancing public health outcomes in the region.
Strategic Investments in Healthcare Infrastructure
Governor Buni acknowledged the support of various stakeholders, including the Federal Government and international development partners such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Aliko Dangote Foundation, UNICEF, and WHO. These partnerships have played a critical role in advancing healthcare initiatives in Yobe State.
He also detailed significant investments in healthcare infrastructure, including the establishment of 142 functional primary healthcare centers, the procurement of medical equipment and drugs, and the recruitment of over 2,000 qualified healthcare personnel. These efforts have contributed to a notable improvement in healthcare delivery across the state.
“This administration is committed to healthcare delivery at all levels because a healthy population is indeed an essential asset for speedy socio-economic development,” said Buni. “We therefore remain focused on making quality healthcare services accessible and affordable to our people across the State.”
Recognizing Achievements and Expanding Initiatives
The governor pointed to several key achievements, including Yobe State’s recognition as the 2024 North East Zonal Champion for the Primary Health Care Leadership Challenge. This award highlights the state’s leadership in implementing effective healthcare strategies.
In addition, the state has established two key agencies: the Yobe State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency and the Yobe State Drugs and Medical Consumables Management Agency. These institutions are designed to address challenges related to healthcare financing and the supply of medical resources.
Buni also called on traditional rulers to play an active role in strengthening primary healthcare services within their domains. He urged all stakeholders to identify and address existing gaps in healthcare delivery to ensure continuous improvement.
Addressing Critical Challenges
One of the pressing issues discussed during the meeting was the rising concern over drug abuse. The governor expressed his deep worry about the impact of this problem on the youth and the future of the state. He directed the 17 Local Government Council Chairmen to work closely with traditional rulers to implement proactive measures against drug trafficking and consumption.
“We must act now and proactively to save our youth and the future of the state from the dangers posed by drug abuse currently threatening many states,” Buni stated. He emphasized that the full force of the law should be applied against anyone involved in the trafficking or use of prohibited drugs.
Improving Immunization Coverage
Earlier in the event, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Muhammad Lawan Gana, shared positive results from a routine immunisation-supportive supervision assessment conducted by the National Healthcare Development Agency. According to the assessment, Yobe State ranked among the best-performing states in the country.
Dr. Baba Gana Kundi, Executive Secretary of the state Primary Healthcare Agency, commended traditional rulers for their support in increasing immunization coverage. However, he noted that some challenges, such as cases of non-compliance, need to be addressed in future initiatives.
Conclusion
Through its comprehensive approach to healthcare, Yobe State is setting a strong foundation for sustainable development. By investing in infrastructure, fostering partnerships, and addressing critical public health issues, the state is taking meaningful steps toward a healthier and more prosperous future for its citizens.
