2025 Ballon d’Or Power Rankings: Who Will Follow Rodri’s Footsteps?
Rodri made history last year by winning the Ballon d’Or, becoming only the third player outside of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo to claim the prestigious award since 2007. His exceptional performances for Manchester City and Spain in 2024 solidified his place among football’s elite. But who will take the crown this year? As the Club World Cup reaches its climax, we present our updated 2025 Ballon d’Or power rankings. This list will be continuously updated throughout the year.
10. Scott McTominay
McTominay played a key role in Napoli’s Serie A triumph and was named as the league’s Most Valuable Player for the 2024-25 season. While his performance on the pitch deserves recognition, it’s hard not to acknowledge his off-field contributions—like his unique description of British tomatoes as “red water” and the potential murals that could be painted in his honor across Naples. Despite his efforts, McTominay hasn’t quite reached the level needed to compete with the top names. However, he should still receive a nomination and might even make the final top 10.
9. Pedri
Gavi recently stated that no one deserves the Ballon d’Or more than Pedri. While we may not fully agree, Pedri has shown remarkable form in the 2024-25 season and is certainly a contender. However, it seems unlikely that a midfielder will win the award two years in a row. If a midfielder does take the title, there’s another name that stands out.
8. Kylian Mbappe
Mbappe had a challenging debut season with Real Madrid, as they failed to secure any major trophies. Scoring a hat-trick in an El Clasico defeat cost them their La Liga hopes, and he didn’t manage to win the Ballon d’Or. However, he did win the European Golden Shoe, which is a significant achievement. It seems that a Ballon d’Or win is still a few years away for Mbappe, especially after Madrid’s loss to PSG in the Club World Cup semi-finals.
7. Desire Doue
Doue made a stunning impact in the Champions League final as a teenager, scoring two goals and providing an assist. Although he didn’t have a full season to match that performance, his display ensures he’ll get a nomination. He’s also a strong candidate for the Golden Boy award.
6. Raphinha
Raphinha was a clear frontrunner until Inter’s late equalizer in the Champions League semis. If Yamal had taken one of the chances he was given, Raphinha would have broken Ronaldo’s record for goal contributions in a European campaign. Instead, he tied the record but lost some momentum when he was absent in Munich. His numbers have been impressive, and he won a domestic double. However, the competition is fierce this year.
5. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia
Kvaratskhelia had an outstanding season, winning two league titles, a Champions League winner’s medal, and reaching the Club World Cup final. He added to the final with a goal, showing his talent. He’s a unique and fun player to watch, and his performances have been nothing short of spectacular.
4. Vitinha (NEW)
Vitinha was initially overlooked due to the strength of PSG’s midfield. However, his performances in the Nations League highlighted his abilities. If PSG can beat Chelsea in the Club World Cup final, Vitinha could easily make the podium.
3. Lamine Yamal
Yamal, Barcelona’s rising star, had an incredible season at just 17. His goals and assists were impressive, but he fell short of Europe’s elite. However, watching him play is like witnessing a young Messi or Ronaldinho. His performances in the Champions League semifinals and the Catalan derby were extraordinary. While the Nations League final might have affected his chances, he still has time to become the youngest ever Ballon d’Or winner.
2. Mohamed Salah
Salah had a stellar season, leading Liverpool to the Premier League title. However, he slowed down in the latter part of the campaign, which affected his chances. Despite this, he remains a strong contender. If voters remember his consistent performance throughout the season, he could end up on the podium.
1. Ousmane Dembele
Dembele was instrumental in PSG’s Champions League victory, despite not being at his peak during the final stretch of the season. His mid-season form turned the team’s fortunes around, and his goals against Arsenal and Liverpool were crucial. PSG’s collective success might hinder individual recognition, but Dembele’s recent performances in the Club World Cup have kept him as the frontrunner.
