Ex- champ bets on Itauma to dethrone Usyk

George Groves Believes Moses Itauma Could End Usyk’s Dominance

Former super-middleweight world champion George Groves has made a bold prediction about the future of the heavyweight division. According to reports, Groves believes that rising Nigerian-British heavyweight Moses Itauma has the potential to challenge and ultimately end Oleksandr Usyk’s reign within the next year.

Groves emphasized that while Usyk remains undefeated and highly respected, his time at the top of the heavyweight division is coming to an end. He highlighted Itauma, a 20-year-old talent who is being seen as one of the most promising prospects in the sport, as the fighter who could dethrone the Ukrainian champion.

“I think Usyk beats Moses Itauma right now. But I think in 12 months he won’t beat Itauma,” Groves said in an interview with eScapistMagazine. “Maybe then, that is like the passing of the torch. Usyk’s era is almost over. Because he’s beaten all of these guys. He’s beaten them and he’s gone back to the drawing board to beat them again.”

Usyk, the undisputed world heavyweight champion, recently defended his titles against Daniel Dubois. He has also faced challenges from notable names such as Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua. However, Groves insists that a new generation of fighters is emerging, with Itauma leading the charge.

A New Generation Rising

Groves pointed out that the current wave of young talents is showing promise and that Itauma is at the forefront of this movement. The former champion sees potential in the 20-year-old and believes he could soon become a dominant force in the division.

In addition to his comments on Itauma, Groves was critical of Daniel Dubois’ preparation for his fight against Usyk. He questioned the mental focus of the British heavyweight after videos surfaced showing a party at Dubois’ family home on the day of the bout.

“It’s the worst prep any fighter could ever have,” Groves said. “They do not need to be surrounded by people in any sort of environment, pre-fight. Even doing it in fight week is a bad idea, but on the day of the fight, it is bizarre.”

He added, “If you need to surround yourself with people for comfort, to me that is only a weakness. If I saw that in someone I was boxing, I’d see that as weakness. I’d think by this age he’d have a bit more autonomy on his own career.”

Evaluating the Future of Heavyweight Boxing

Groves’ comments reflect a growing sentiment among boxing insiders that the current era of dominance by established champions is beginning to shift. With younger, more dynamic fighters entering the scene, the landscape of the heavyweight division is expected to change significantly in the coming years.

Moses Itauma, with his physical tools and potential, represents the kind of talent that could disrupt the status quo. His development and progression will be closely watched by fans and analysts alike.

As the sport continues to evolve, the question remains: Will Itauma be the one to take down Usyk? For now, Groves is confident that the answer lies in the near future.
