A Journey of Resilience and Innovation
Thirty-one years after Rwanda’s liberation, the country has undergone a remarkable transformation. Few stories encapsulate this change more vividly than that of Jennifer Ingabire, a pioneering figure in security technology and business. As a member of a new generation of Rwandan women who have embraced the opportunities created by inclusive policies, empowerment initiatives, and entrepreneurial support, she exemplifies the potential of a nation that values its people.
Born in Uganda 49 years ago, Ingabire’s journey mirrors Rwanda’s own evolution. After returning to her homeland, she navigated the challenges of a male-dominated industry and built two thriving companies—Orbit Solutions and Security World Rwanda. Her path is a testament to how ambition can flourish in an environment that supports growth and innovation.
Education and Entrepreneurial Foundations
Ingabire’s academic background includes studies at Makerere University Business School, the Kigali Institute of Science and Technology, and an MBA in Project Management from the Maastricht School of Management. These experiences laid the foundation for her entrepreneurial ventures. Starting in the security sector, she quickly recognized the potential of electronic security systems as infrastructure and policy evolved to accommodate new technologies.
In 2009, she launched Security World Technology in partnership with a Ugandan supplier. By 2014, she established Orbit Solutions, capitalizing on policy changes such as building code regulations that mandated the use of fire extinguishers and CCTV systems. These developments provided the perfect platform for her to build her businesses.
Overcoming Challenges
Ingabire’s journey was not without obstacles. The early days were marked by financial constraints, staffing issues, and cultural biases that often questioned the capabilities of local and female entrepreneurs. She began by purchasing stock on demand and eventually secured her first overdraft of Rwf 30 million to expand her inventory. However, gaining trust from clients proved more difficult.
She recalls instances where clients doubted her ability to deliver, even when products were available locally. “When I quoted MTN Rwanda for a fire suppression system, they didn’t think we could do it locally,” she says. Despite these challenges, she persisted and gradually built a reputation for quality and reliability.
Empowerment Through Growth
As Rwanda continues to develop, Ingabire sees herself as part of a larger national narrative. She emphasizes the importance of contributing to the country’s growth through employment, taxation, and compliance. “When we pay taxes, we’re building the country. When we hire, we’re investing in people,” she reflects.
Her approach to leadership involved nurturing talent and fostering a culture of trust. Initially, many of her employees were from Kenya, but over time, she focused on hiring locals, including technicians from IPRCs and accountants from local universities. This strategy allowed her to step back from day-to-day operations and focus on strategic leadership.
Financial Confidence and Strategic Planning
Access to finance played a crucial role in Ingabire’s growth. She built relationships with banks like I&M Bank and Equity Bank, learning to manage multiple loans and encouraging other women to do the same. “At first, I feared taking loans. But I started small, paid back the first one, and went for a bigger one,” she explains.
Her understanding of business structuring and reinvestment highlights the importance of smart compliance. By registering property under her business, she maximizes returns and ensures all expenses are deductible, enabling faster growth.
Breaking Barriers and Inspiring Others
Ingabire believes that confidence is key, especially for women. “Culture has always put women in the background,” she says. “But I believe women have more potential than men.” She encourages women to embrace innovation, seek information, and take proactive steps to achieve their goals.
Her ventures have expanded beyond security into construction and apartment rentals, reflecting her belief in turning ideas into income. “We must think about assets, not liabilities,” she urges. “Focus on what builds value.”
Balancing Work and Family
Juggling work and motherhood is no small task, but Ingabire sees it as a shared responsibility. “Technology has made it possible to work from anywhere,” she notes. She emphasizes the importance of planning, delegation, and efficient time management to maintain balance.
She also stresses the need for both parents to be present in their children’s lives, highlighting the importance of leading by example while nurturing relationships.
A Message to Young Women
To young Rwandan girls and women, Ingabire offers a message of courage and determination. “Break the barrier of fear. Believe in yourself. Be innovative. Focus on building, not consuming.” She acknowledges that the path may not be easy, but she promises that progress is achievable.
“The sky is the limit,” she says. “I’ve tested it. I’ve seen it. And it works.” Her story is a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when ambition meets opportunity.
