Health Official Meets Chinese Diplomat

Strengthening Health Cooperation Between Sudan and China

In a significant diplomatic engagement, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health in Sudan, Dr. Haitham Mohamed Ibrahim, met with the Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Sudan, Mr. Qiang Shibang Hawa, along with his delegation. The meeting took place at Dr. Ibrahim’s office in Port Sudan on Tuesday, highlighting the strong and evolving relationship between Sudan and China.

The discussions centered around enhancing health cooperation between the two nations, with a particular focus on the return of the Chinese medical mission and the resumption of operations at Chinese hospitals in Sudan. These facilities have played a crucial role in providing essential healthcare services to the local population, especially during times of crisis.

Dr. Ibrahim expressed deep appreciation for China’s unwavering support for the Sudanese health sector, particularly during the ongoing conflict. He praised China’s commitment to continue offering critical medicines, medical supplies, and implementing various health projects. This support has been vital in maintaining public health and addressing the challenges posed by the war.

The Undersecretary also emphasized Sudan’s desire to expand cooperation with China across multiple sectors, with a special emphasis on health. He highlighted key hospitals such as the Chinese Friendship Hospital, Abu Ushar Hospital, Damazin Hospital, and Omdurman Hospital as central to this collaboration. These institutions serve as focal points for joint efforts under a shared protocol aimed at improving healthcare delivery in Sudan.

Expanding Training Opportunities and Medical Technology

The meeting also addressed the availability of training opportunities in China for Sudanese medical professionals. Discussions focused on streamlining procedures for trainees specializing in various fields, ensuring they can benefit from China’s advanced medical education and research facilities. This initiative aims to build local capacity and enhance the quality of healthcare services in Sudan.

In addition, the topic of pharmaceutical manufacturing was discussed, with a specific emphasis on the rehabilitation of the Shanghai Pharmaceutical Factory. This facility represents a partnership between China and Sudan and is crucial for ensuring the availability of essential medicines within the country. Restoring its operations is seen as a key step toward self-sufficiency in drug production.

The importance of China’s continued support during the reconstruction phase was reiterated by both parties. The goal is to restore medical services to full capacity, including the complete return of the Chinese medical mission. This will help stabilize the healthcare system and ensure that communities receive the care they need.

A Sincere and Solid Partnership

Mr. Qiang Shibang expressed the Chinese government’s concern for the situation in Sudan and reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the country. He emphasized that China’s assistance goes beyond mere cooperation, describing it as a sincere and solid partnership. The focus is on expanding collaboration to include medical technology and the implementation of reconstruction projects once the conflict concludes.

This partnership is built on mutual respect, shared goals, and a commitment to long-term development. Both nations recognize the value of working together to address the challenges facing Sudan and to create a more resilient and sustainable healthcare system.

As the dialogue continues, the hope is that the cooperation between Sudan and China will not only strengthen their bilateral ties but also contribute to the broader well-being of the Sudanese people. Through sustained efforts and shared vision, the two countries are poised to achieve meaningful progress in the field of public health.
