The 2025 National High School Football and Kickball Championship: A Celebration of Talent and Community

The 2025 National High School Football and Kickball Championship is reaching a peak this week as students from nine counties across the region come together to compete for regional recognition, school pride, and national acclaim. This annual event, organized by National High School Sports, has returned with renewed energy, offering a platform for student engagement through athletics. It also serves as an opportunity to promote academic excellence and foster community spirit.

The tournament kicked off on Monday, July 14, and has already sparked excitement in several key locations. From Maryland to Bomi and Grand Gedeh, high-stakes matches are being played, drawing large crowds and reigniting long-standing rivalries.

Key Matches and Regional Highlights

In Maryland County, the Pleebo Sports Arena is the hub of activity, hosting a series of doubleheaders. J.S. Pratt High School is set to face Fatima High School in both football and kickball, followed by matchups between Pleebo High and Sodoken High. Organizers anticipate strong attendance from the southeastern region, highlighting the growing popularity of the event.

In Bomi County, traditional football powerhouses are clashing. C.H. Dewey High will take on United Methodist Pentecostal High, while St. Dominic Catholic faces off against Anderson Weamah United Methodist. These matches have become staples of Bomi’s dynamic high school sports culture, showcasing the passion and dedication of local athletes.

Grand Gedeh County is also witnessing intense competition at the Albert White Stadium in Zwedru. Zwedru Multilateral High School will square off against M. Nixon Garlo High, followed by a marquee clash between Baptist High and Matula Wilson Assembly of God in both football and kickball. This rivalry is known for its intensity and fervent fan support, making it one of the most anticipated matches of the season.

Expanding the Tournament Across the Country

The championship is not confined to a single location. Over the course of the week, additional fixtures will be held in Grand Cape Mount, Grand Kru, Nimba, Gbarpolu, Sinoe, and Lofa counties. Each day brings new matchups and opportunities for fans to witness emerging talent.

On Wednesday, Bo Community High will face Sinje High in Grand Cape Mount. Meanwhile, P.G. Wolo, the 2017 football runner-up, returns to competition in Grand Kru, adding another layer of excitement to the event.

Thursday’s action includes a triple-header in Ganta, Nimba County, featuring Ganta Methodist, Francis Nya Maweah, Rainbow Covenant, and Messiah Christian Academy. Friday’s matches will highlight key showdowns in Gbarpolu and Sinoe, while Lofa County will host games across four venues—Zorzor, Voinjama, Foya, and Kolahun—with over a dozen high schools participating.

Rewards for Excellence

Winning teams in the tournament will not only gain bragging rights but also receive significant rewards. The champions will walk away with $7,000 in prize money, gold medals, a championship trophy, and the chance to participate in international friendlies in either Ghana or Nigeria. Runners-up will earn $5,000, while Most Valuable Players (MVPs) in both football and kickball will receive $1,000 each, along with sponsor packages.

Beyond the Game: A Movement for Youth Development

Since its launch in 2017, the National High School Football and Kickball Championship has grown into a flagship event for youth development in Liberia. Organizers emphasize that the initiative goes beyond sports, aiming to instill character-building values and academic discipline among students.

“This is not just a tournament; it’s a movement,” said a spokesperson for National High School Sports. “We’re using sports to inspire excellence—in classrooms, on the field, and in communities.”

As the week progresses, attention turns to upcoming fixtures in Grand Cape Mount and Grand Kru counties, where fans and scouts are eager to witness the rise of new athletic talents. The tournament continues to bring people together, celebrating the spirit of competition and the power of sport to unite communities.
