I Tested the Kia EV4 Again – Comfortable Seat, Mixed Pros and Cons

A Comprehensive Review of the Kia EV4

The Kia EV4 is a vehicle that has made a strong impression, especially after a recent test drive. This marks the second encounter with the model, following a two-hour test drive in April. The long-range variant tested was equipped with an 81.4kWh NCM battery and came with full-option specifications. The factory price is 56.4 million won, but with various benefits such as the electric vehicle tax discount and the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s standard electric vehicle subsidy, the actual purchase price drops to 47.31 million won. With its competitive battery and feature set, it overlaps with the pricing of E-GMP-based 800V models.

Design and Exterior Features

The test car was painted in snow white pearl, a color known for its simplicity and popularity. It is the only glossy option, adding 80,000 won to the color cost. The front design bears a resemblance to the Kia K8, featuring a vertical lamp that gives a distinct look compared to traditional sedans. The long tail rear wheel overhang adds to the unique appearance, setting it apart from conventional sedan designs.

The aspect ratio is notably different from the Avante, with a full length of 4730 mm—only 20 mm shorter than the modern Avante. The height of the EV4 is 1,480mm, which is 60mm higher due to the lower battery pack placement. The wheelbase measures 2820 mm, which is 100 mm longer than the Avante, thanks to the freedom offered by electric vehicle design. The long tail design helps reduce air resistance, achieving a coefficient of 0.229 cd, the lowest in the Kia lineup.

The rear design has a stronger personality, with vertical lights on either end. While the front lacks the Tiger Face design, the rear features unique spoilers that give a futuristic feel. Compared to the EV3, the EV4’s rear design is more distinctive.

Interior and Comfort

Inside, the EV4 shares similarities with the EV3, though there are differences in button layout and materials. The steering wheel is polygonal, offering good visibility and grip. The seat position is lower than the EV3, making it more akin to a traditional sedan. However, the headroom is not as generous as the Ioniq 6, and the second row may be uncomfortable for tall adults.

Despite this, the legroom in both rows is impressive, with the second row featuring a flat floor. The trunk space is also deeper and wider than expected, though the narrow opening can be inconvenient for bulky items. The EV4 offers excellent ride comfort, with a smooth and gentle experience over bumps and manholes. The ride quality surpasses that of the EV3, thanks to a lower ground clearance.

Performance and Driving Experience

The EV4 is equipped with an electric motor producing 150 kW and 283 Nm of torque. The acceleration is smooth and comfortable, with five driving modes available: Eco, Normal, Sports, MyDrive, and Snow. The Eco mode provides a familiar feel similar to internal combustion vehicles, while the Sports mode offers a more responsive experience. However, the acceleration itself remains consistent across modes, making the Eco and Normal settings the most commonly used.

Regenerative braking is available in three stages, with Stage 3 providing strong deceleration that may cause motion sickness for passengers. The EV4’s efficiency is notable, with a certified range of 533 km on a single charge. In optimal conditions, this could extend beyond 600 km.

Comfort and User Experience

Comfort is a standout feature of the EV4. The seats are highly comfortable, with well-arranged foam and mesh-type headrests that reduce neck fatigue during long drives. The accelerator pedal, handling, and ride all contribute to a focus on comfort, making it ideal for drivers who prioritize a smooth and relaxing experience.

However, the EV4 may lack the sporty feel that some drivers seek. The driving dynamics are more subdued, which could be a downside for those who enjoy a more engaging drive. Additionally, the 5-inch air conditioning monitor, while functional, may be inconvenient to use while driving.

Conclusion

The Kia EV4 is a vehicle that maximizes comfort, offering excellent ride quality, seating, and efficiency. While it may not appeal to drivers seeking a more dynamic experience, it is a strong contender for those looking for a relaxed and comfortable electric vehicle. The upcoming all-wheel drive GT version is expected to add more driving pleasure, making the EV4 a versatile choice for a wide range of consumers.
