The Hidden Threat of Sleep Apnoea and Its Impact on Health

Sleep apnoea is a condition that has been increasingly highlighted by medical professionals due to its potential to cause severe health complications. A general practitioner, Dr Asif Ahmed, has raised awareness about the importance of diagnosing this often-overlooked condition, which can significantly affect a person’s quality of life and longevity.

Dr Ahmed described sleep apnoea as “one of the most chronically undiagnosed conditions out there.” This disorder involves repeated interruptions in breathing during sleep, leading to poor sleep quality and a range of health issues. It is estimated that millions of people in the UK suffer from this condition, yet it often goes unnoticed until serious consequences arise.

One of the key concerns is that sleep apnoea can mask or exacerbate other health conditions such as chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, and prediabetes. According to Dr Ahmed, these conditions cannot be effectively managed without first addressing sleep apnoea. He emphasized that treating the underlying issue is essential for any therapeutic success.

Fibromyalgia, a long-term condition characterized by widespread pain and fatigue, is one example of how sleep apnoea can complicate existing health problems. In addition to causing exhaustion, sleep apnoea is associated with an increased risk of high blood pressure, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and depression. Recent studies have also explored a possible link between sleep apnoea and lung cancer, although more research is needed to confirm this connection.

The impact of untreated sleep apnoea can be profound. Dr Ahmed warned that it could potentially reduce a person’s lifespan by 10 to 14 years. He stressed that the condition significantly affects metabolism and can hinder the effectiveness of other treatments. “If it’s undiagnosed and untreated, nothing we do therapeutically is going to work,” he said.

Despite its dangers, sleep apnoea often remains hidden, especially among individuals who live alone. Partners are typically the ones who notice symptoms such as loud snoring or episodes where a person stops breathing during sleep. This highlights the importance of raising awareness and encouraging open conversations about sleep health.

Thankfully, there are now simple at-home test kits available that can help identify whether someone has sleep apnoea. These tools allow individuals to monitor their breathing patterns and seek early intervention. Dr Ahmed urged anyone experiencing chronic fatigue, constant tiredness, or difficulty losing weight to get checked for sleep apnoea.

There are different types of sleep apnoea, with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) being the most common. OSA occurs when the throat muscles relax and narrow, blocking the airway. This causes the brain to wake the person up briefly to restore oxygen flow, leading to disrupted sleep and daytime exhaustion.

In the UK, it is estimated that nearly 4 million people have moderate or severe OSA, though the actual number may be higher due to under-diagnosis. Factors contributing to sleep apnoea include obesity, smoking, alcohol consumption, and enlarged tonsils.

Common symptoms of sleep apnoea include loud snoring, frequent awakenings during the night, and persistent daytime fatigue. Other signs may include difficulty concentrating, mood swings, and headaches upon waking. These symptoms can significantly impact daily life and overall well-being.

The National Health Service (NHS) recommends that individuals with suspected sleep apnoea consult their GP. Diagnosis typically involves using specialized kits that measure breathing rate and heart activity, often worn at home. The data collected helps determine the severity of the condition and guide treatment options.

Treatment for sleep apnoea may include the use of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines, which deliver air through a mask to keep the airway open during sleep. Surgery to widen the airway is another option in certain cases. Simple lifestyle changes, such as avoiding sleeping on the back, can also help manage symptoms.

However, medical professionals stress the importance of seeking professional help rather than self-diagnosing. Early detection and treatment can prevent long-term health complications and improve quality of life.
