The Importance of Accurate Metering in the Oil and Gas Industry

During the event, Mr. Reynolds Brew, Managing Director of Engineers and Brew Solutions, highlighted the importance of accurate metering in optimizing operations and ensuring value delivery to stakeholders. He stated, “Accurate metering is not just a technical requirement, but a business imperative that can make or break the profitability of oil and gas operations. We must prioritize accurate metering to unlock the full potential of our industry.”

Mr. Brew also pointed out the economic consequences of inaccurate metering, referencing the PIAC 2024 report, which indicated that Ghana lost approximately US$170 million due to the flaring of 28.5 billion cubic feet of natural gas in the upstream petroleum sector. This loss represents a significant opportunity cost that could have been used for other development initiatives.

Government’s Role in Ensuring Transparency

Mr. Emmanuel Bedzrah, Chairman of the Select Committee on Energy, urged the government to acquire its own metering systems to ensure quality and efficient delivery in the oil and gas industry. He argued that having independent metering equipment would allow for verification of data provided by foreign oil producers and protect national assets.

Bedzrah explained, “Those who have been measuring for us are no longer with us, so they do their own metering, and the only person there is from customs or GRA. And we don’t have any metering equipment from the government to checkmate the producer or measure. So we need to invest in the metering systems and ensure we maintain quality and generate more income.”

The Need for Regular Maintenance and Validation

Mr. George Nii Tettey, a measurement engineer from the UAE, stressed the importance of regular checks and balances in metering systems. He cited an example where an oil field producing 100,000 barrels a day experienced a 1% error in its metering system, leading to an annual loss of over US$20 million.

Tettey said, “We need to go back to the basics and have a look at the metering systems that we have installed over the years. Are they being validated? Are they being calibrated? Are they even certified before being installed?” He emphasized the necessity of consistent maintenance to ensure reliable measurements.

Modern Metering Systems and Check Metering

The summit also addressed the need for modern metering technologies, such as ultrasonic meters and co-release meters, to be implemented in oil and gas fields. Tettey proposed the use of check metering, where one meter performs active measurement while another confirms the readings, helping to detect and resolve errors.
