These New Leatherman Knives Are Just Great Knives

The Evolution of Practical Tools

Long ago, Leatherman revolutionized the way people approached unexpected problems while on the move. Whether it was picking up a nail, dealing with a loose nut or screw, or making an emergency electrical fix, these situations often required carrying a bulky tool chest. This was not only cumbersome but also impractical, as finding the right tool could be a challenge and the weight was significant.

Leatherman introduced the multitool, transforming the entire concept of having a portable toolkit. This innovation allowed people to carry a compact version of their usual toolset, making it easier to handle various tasks on the go. I always have a Leatherman in my backpack, and it has saved me more times than I can count.

However, there are scenarios where a multitool isn’t the best choice. In such cases, a simple pocket knife becomes invaluable. These knives are efficient and versatile, suitable for a wide range of situations. Now, Leatherman is expanding its offerings into this space with both fixed and folding knives.

Introducing the New Knife Collection

Leatherman has launched a total of five knives, including three fixed blades and two folding models. All of them feature MagnaCut steel, a new type of steel that is gaining popularity due to its durability, edge retention, ease of sharpening, and resistance to corrosion. This material breaks the traditional trade-off between speed, quality, and cost, offering all three benefits.

The three fixed-blade knives each have distinct characteristics. The Pioneer is designed for heavy-duty use, the Trac is ideal for outdoor activities, and the Rustle is perfect for preparing meals around a campfire. Despite their different purposes, they are all built to withstand tough conditions and can be used for multiple tasks.

Each of the fixed-blade knives comes with a unique sheath and handle. The Pioneer and Rustle feature G10 handles paired with hybrid leather and Kydex sheaths, while the Trac has a G10 handle with a pure leather sheath. They are available in various color options to match personal preferences.

Folding Knives for Everyday Use

While fixed-blade knives have their advantages, I personally prefer folding knives. Fortunately, Leatherman has two options in this category: the Blazer and the Glider. Both use MagnaCut steel and have handles made from machined 416 stainless steel, ensuring they are lightweight yet sturdy.

The Blazer features a 3.15-inch hollow saber ground drop point blade, while the Glider has a 3-inch hollow saber ground modified sheepsfoot blade. Although both are suitable for daily use, the Blazer is tailored for adventure scenarios, whereas the Glider is more utility-focused. Each model is available in different colorways, just like the fixed-blade knives.

Price and Value

Good knives are not cheap, and even fewer come with lifetime warranties. Additionally, few high-quality knives are still manufactured in the United States. The Leatherman knives, however, are built here and are designed to last. While they are not inexpensive, their prices are comparable to other premium knives in the market.

The fixed-blade knives have MSRP prices ranging from $279.95 to $299.95, while the folding models also carry a price tag of $299.95. For over 40 years, Leatherman has been known for its multi-tools, and now it’s expanding its expertise into the knife market. According to Ben Rivera, CEO of Leatherman Tool Group, “Our knife collection is more than just a new product. A Leatherman knife speaks to a user’s identity, about doing more with less. It’s about being built differently.”

Final Thoughts

Whether you’re embarking on an adventure or simply need a reliable tool for daily tasks, Leatherman’s new knife collection offers a blend of functionality, durability, and style. With a focus on quality and innovation, these knives are designed to meet the needs of modern users who value practicality and performance.
