Tragic Death of 40-Year-Old Businesswoman After Butt Enhancement Surgery

Tragic Death of a Beloved Businesswoman After Cosmetic Procedures

A well-known businesswoman, who was deeply loved in her community, passed away suddenly after undergoing three cosmetic procedures shortly after celebrating a significant milestone in her life. The incident has raised concerns about the safety and regulation of cosmetic surgeries.

Natália Cavanellas, 40, suffered a cardiac arrest on Monday afternoon just moments after receiving an injection in her buttocks while on the operating table at San Gennaro Hospital in São Paulo. According to a report from the São Paulo Civil Police, obtained by G1 news outlet, Cavanellas had hired renowned plastic surgeon Edgar Lopez to perform liposuction, a buttock enhancement, and additional work on her breast implants.

Lopez was nearing the completion of the cosmetic surgery around 4:20 pm local time when he administered the injection to the gluteal area. Shortly after, Cavanellas’ heart stopped beating, and the medical team immediately tried to revive her. Despite their efforts, she was pronounced dead in the operating room.

The police report stated that the medical team attempted resuscitation but was ultimately unsuccessful, although the patient initially responded to the interventions. The operating staff suggested that Cavanellas’ cardiac arrest might have been caused by a fat embolism, which occurs when fat particles enter the bloodstream and obstruct blood flow.

Cavanellas did not have any known health issues at the time of the surgery, as confirmed by her sister to the authorities. She had previously undergone breast implant surgery around two years ago without experiencing any complications.

In a statement, a lawyer representing Lopez mentioned that Cavanellas had undergone several pre-operative tests. “Unfortunately, the patient developed a serious complication, compatible with pulmonary embolism, a rare event, but recognized in the medical literature as possible, even with all the preventive measures adopted,” the attorney said. He added that the surgeon was providing full support to the family and remained available for technical discussions, always respecting the patient and the family’s confidentiality.

Lopez claims to be an expert in high-definition liposuction, also known as liposculpture, and mammoplasty. On his professional website, he highlights his role as the first doctor in the South American nation to use Renuvion, a minimally invasive technology that tightens the skin regardless of whether a person undergoes liposuction or not.

Despite his credentials, Lopez faced disciplinary actions from professional bodies. He was a member of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and the International Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. However, the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery revoked his recognition in May 2021 after it was discovered that he was not adhering to their guidelines.

In July 2021, the Regional Medical Council of the State of São Paulo imposed a six-month ban on Lopez’s medical practice. A court later reduced the punishment to four months. The ban was extended in November, and Lopez was allowed to resume his duties in May 2022.

Cavanellas leaves behind her husband, whom she married in 2019, and their three-year-old daughter. She was the founder of a public relations, marketing, and events planning company, offering services to a community of over 800 businesswomen and executives. In March, she was honored by the São Paulo City Council as one of the 100 most successful women in business. Her untimely death has left a profound impact on her family, friends, and the broader community.
