WAFCON 2024: AGL Unveils Campaign for Morocco Events

A New Era for Women’s Football in Africa

The 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) has seen a significant boost with the launch of the ‘Moving Africa Forward’ initiative. This campaign, spearheaded by the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) main logistics partner, highlights a growing commitment to supporting women’s football across the continent. The initiative is set to run alongside the tournament and will also be used for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco later this year.

Kenya’s Absence and the Tournament’s Progress

Despite the excitement surrounding the event, Kenya’s Harambee Starlets did not qualify for the competition. The tournament, which will run until July 26 in Morocco, is now entering its fifth day. On Wednesday, July 9, Zambia will face Senegal at the Stade El Bachir, marking an important moment in the group stage. This match will be followed by Morocco’s second game against the Democratic Republic of Congo at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat.

Exciting Performances and Strong Showings

So far, the WAFCON 2024 has delivered thrilling performances from key players such as Barbra Banda, Ghizlane Chebbak, and Rinsola Babajide. Defending champions South Africa made a strong statement with a 2-0 victory over Ghana, while Nigeria showcased their dominance with a comprehensive 3-0 win over Tunisia. These results underline the high level of competition and the growing strength of women’s football in Africa.

Africa Global Logistics and the ‘Moving Africa Forward’ Campaign

As the teams compete across six venues in Morocco, Africa Global Logistics (AGL), the official logistics partner of CAF, has launched the ‘Moving Africa Forward’ campaign. This initiative is part of a broader partnership between AGL and CAF, which was signed in April. The campaign aims to support African football and contribute to the continent’s transformation.

“We share the same vision of unity and excellence for Africa. We aim to support the successful organisation of major tournaments like AFCON and WAFCON, and also to transform African football into a lasting driver of economic and social development,” said Philippe Labonne, President of Africa Global Logistics.

Promoting Women’s Inclusion

AGL’s partnership with CAF for WAFCON 2024 highlights the intersection between two fields traditionally dominated by men: logistics and sports. In 2024, women accounted for 20% of AGL’s employees and 25% of managers. The pan-African initiative underscores AGL’s commitment to diversity and inclusion across all levels.

“This is our way of saying that the future of the continent will be built with women, in all areas: on the ground as well as in business. Supporting the Women’s AFCON is also an opportunity to celebrate African women and invest in a more inclusive, equitable and forward-looking Africa,” said Khadija Komara, Director of Communications and Sponsorship at AGL.

Increased Prize Money and Investment in Women’s Football

The campaign aligns with CAF’s efforts to elevate the women’s game. This year’s WAFCON has seen a 45% increase in prize money, with the overall winner receiving a 100% increase. The champion team will now take home USD 1,000,000 (KSh 129 million), as reported on CAF’s website.

AGL plans to promote the ‘Moving Africa Forward’ campaign through social media platforms and on-site in Morocco. The initiative aims to demonstrate how sports and business can serve as powerful tools for empowering women across Africa. By highlighting these connections, AGL is helping to shape a future where women play a central role in both football and the broader economy.
