World’s Narrowest Car Unveiled: 20-Inch Ultra-Slim Fiat Panda

A Remarkable Creation: The World’s Slimmest Electric Vehicle

In a world where space is at a premium, an Italian mechanic has taken the concept of compact vehicles to a whole new level. This ultra-slim electric vehicle, which looks like it belongs in a cartoon or a fantasy movie, is actually a fully functional car. Measuring just 19.6 inches (50cm) wide, the Fiat Panda is designed to fit a driver and one passenger – provided they are slender enough.

The car can steer left and right, stop, and move forward and backward, similar to any other automobile, albeit at slow speeds. Its unique design makes it ideal for those frustrated by wasted space in parking lots, as it can fit into some of the tightest gaps. However, the vehicle has received mixed reactions on social media, with many calling it “impractical,” “ugly,” and even “nuts.”

One Reddit user joked that the car resembles a “Flintstones hatch where you just put your feet down on the ground to stabilize yourself.” Another commented, “The only car allowed in the bike lane,” while someone else suggested, “I can see Mr. Bean driving this.” Others pointed out that the average American wouldn’t fit, and some found the design claustrophobic. One person questioned whether the vehicle was designed with health and safety regulations in mind.

The remarkable creation was handcrafted by 30-year-old Italian mechanic Andrea Marazzi. He used original materials from a 1993 model Fiat Panda to build the car. Marazzi showcased the vehicle at a recent festival celebrating 45 years of the Fiat Panda in Pandino, a town southeast of Milan. In response to concerns about its stability, he demonstrated the car’s robustness by pushing it, showing that it wobbles but doesn’t fall over.

Specifications of the Slim Car

According to Design Boom, the vehicle has the following specifications:

  • Weight: 264kg
  • Width: 19.6 inches
  • Height: 57 inches
  • Length: 133 inches
  • Engine: Electric

Despite its slim build, the car includes several features found in normal vehicles, such as four wheels, two rear-view mirrors, and two passenger doors on either side of the driver. At the back, there is a small space for a passenger who must be very short and slender, ideally a child.

The car also features a steering wheel, indicator lights, and a single headlight for nighttime cruising, but it lacks license plates. Instead of a gas engine, it runs on a 24V electric battery and motor from an e-scooter, allowing it to reach a maximum speed of nine miles per hour (15 km/h). This speed is too slow for regular road use.

Marazzi is currently working on submitting the car for a Guinness World Record as the slimmest functioning vehicle ever made.

A Unique Perspective on Design

Gaurav Sood, a consumer electronics expert at Yanko Design, described the vehicle as more of an “art installation than a transport solution.” He noted that the narrow Panda invites viewers to rethink proportions, functionality, and playfulness in mechanical design. According to Sood, the car is a “rolling experiment – part engineering challenge, part tribute, and part public spectacle.”

Although the slim Fiat Panda is a fully functional car, it is not for sale and is not legally registered for public road use. However, it offers a glimpse into what cars of the near future could look like, especially in densely populated areas where space is limited.

Electric cars, which operate on batteries similar to smartphones, are being promoted as the future of personal transportation. Some experts also predict that flying cars will soon take to the skies, utilizing the vast empty space in the air to reduce road congestion.

As the automotive industry continues to evolve, innovations like the slim Fiat Panda challenge traditional notions of vehicle design and functionality. Whether viewed as a novelty or a serious engineering feat, this unique creation highlights the potential for creative solutions in an increasingly crowded world.
